Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office
(Press Release) - On June 8, 2011 shortly before 4 p.m. the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of a
semi unit which had crashed on State Hwy 121 near NW Burnette Rd in the
Town of Garden Valley in Jackson County.
It was
relayed that the truck was hauling shipping containers of sulfuric acid
and caustic soda and there was a reported leak in at least one of the
sulfuric acid containers. Units from Alma Center FD, Alma Center 1st
Responders, Black River Falls FD &EMS, Jackson County Sheriff's
Office and Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the scene along with the
Jackson County Level B Hazmat team. The Regional Level A Hazmat Team
from Eau Claire was also requested and responded to the scene to
assist.

Urgent Care / Outpatient treatment facility
Material spilled: Trichloroacetic Acid (corrosive
liquid)
Persons exposed: 2 facility staff, and one
patient
Narrative: Ventura fire units were
dispatched and responded to a report of a hazardous condition on the
second-floor of the recently opened Ventura County Medical Center's
urgent care center / outpatient treatment facility at the Loma Vista Rd.
campus. Facility staff told first arriving firefighters that a patient
and two staff members were exposed to noxious vapors from an accidental
spill of an acid solution used to treat skin conditions in a
second-floor treatment room. Facility administrators and County
maintenance personnel had already ordered the building evacuated and the
building's ventilation system shut down (to limit vapor spread) prior to
the first responder's arrival. The City's hazardous materials response
team was summoned to the scene to aid in mitigating the hazard. Hazmat
crews entered the second-floor treatment area in personal protective
equipment, collected, bagged and removed the spilled material, then
tested the effected areas to ensure it was safe to reoccupy the
building.
The three persons who had been exposed to the vapors,
and that experienced some respiratory discomfort, had left the area
prior to arrival of firefighters. However, all three were contacted by
facility staff and later returned to the hospital to undergo medical
evaluation.

GARBAGE
TRUCK CATCHES FIRE IN DELHI

A commercial garbage truck
was forced to empty its load in a parking lot off of Delhi Avenue
Thursday morning after the garbage in the truck caught on
fire.
Delhi police and fire department responded to the
scene and had the fire out within minutes. The driver was not
injured.
Rumpke officials are reminding residents and
businesses of what you should and shouldn't throw away.
As a
reminder, Rumpke doesn't accept batteries or combustible materials, as
they contain chemicals that may ignite. Also as residents wrap-up their
spring cleaning and begin opening their swimming pools, local fire
department officials and Rumpke remind residents of the proper way to
dispose of items like chlorine and cleaning supplies.
"While
these items may seem harmless, they could have dangerous implications
for our drivers, landfill employees and the environment," said Randy
Ellert, Rumpke safety specialist.
For
example, pool chemicals are intended to be mixed with large amounts of
water. However, if only a small amount of water is mixed with the
chemical, a dangerous reaction may occur, including harmful vapors and
fires.
"Residents need to realize
that you can't throw everything into your trash can," Ellert said.
"Chemicals and cleaning supplies that are labeled =91Danger' or =91Poison'
typically indicate that they are a household hazardous waste and
residents need to dispose of them accordingly."

SPILL DISRUPTS GYPSUM BUSINESSES

YPSUM, Colorado =97 Emergency cleanup crews responded
to the Highway 6 Store in Gypsum around 11 a.m. Thursday after a
semi-truck driver noticed some of his hazardous cargo was
leaking.
The Highway 6 Store is a Shell gas station located
near the Interstate 70 interchange.
A drum of acentonitrile =97
which is sometimes used as a paint-thinner or cleaning product and can
be highly flammable =97 spilled in the back of a FedEx
truck.
=93I saw a leak and did what I was supposed to do,=94
the driver said before declining further comment.
The gas
station, the Gypsum Grill and a liquor store were evacuated while crews
handled the mess.
=93Acentonitrile tends to collect, so the wind (was) a
good thing,=94 said Gypsum Fire Protection District Chief Dave
Vroman.

EXPLOSION
OF POSSIBLE DRUG LAB IN MOORPARK HOME INJURES 2

MOORPARK, Calif. (KABC) -- Detectives are
investigating a possible drug lab at a Moorpark home after an explosion
and fire inside the garage injured two people on Wednesday
morning.
Neighbors reported hearing an explosion around 1:25
a.m. in the 4200 block of Cedarpine Lane.
Two men
in their 30s were injured and transported to area hospitals for
treatment. A woman and a young child were inside the home at the time,
but were able to get out of the residence unharmed.
Fire
officials said the blaze was mainly contained to the garage area of
home. Detectives said it appears butane was being used in the garage to
cook the stems of marijuana and something went wrong.
Ventura
County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Berger said the culprits were likely
performing what's called "honey-oil extraction," which is a process that
extracts tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, from leftover portions of
marijuana that's normally not smoked, like the stem of the
leaf.

APPARENT
SUICIDE PROMPTS HAZMAT SCARE FOR NORTHWEST-SIDE

SAN ANTONIO -- An apparent suicide with a bizarre
twist causes a hazmat scare on the city's northwest side Tuesday
night.
Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday,
San Antonio police responded to a call from neighbors reporting a foul
smell and liquid running down the driveway from a closed garage in the
4900 block of Port Kenton.
Fire and
police units were dispatched to the location. Upon entering the home,
investigators found one of several notices posted stating a suicide in
progress and toxic chemicals at the location.
In addition, police said the man left a suicide
note.
Investigators discovered
hydrogen sulfide gas. Officers said the victim inhaled the gas inside
his car and died.
The
situation created a hazardous materials incident causing fire and police
officials to evacuate nearby homes.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO HAZMAT SITUATION IN NE
CHARLOTTE

Firefighters had to evacuate homes in northeast
Charlotte because of a hazardous materials situation this
afternoon.
No one had been reported injured in connection with
the incident, which involved a damaged acetylene tank in the 6700 block
of Terry Lane. That's near East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Robinson
Church Road.
It took firefighters about an hour and 40 minutes to
stabilize the damaged tank. It's unclear who owns the tank, but
acetylene is a gas commonly used to fuel cutting
torches.

BOTTLE BOMBS FOUND IN UNFILLED CITY POOL

MANCHESTER =97 Police Tuesday night used a BB gun to
=93neutralize=94 three of four bottle bombs found on the floor of the
unfilled Hunt Pool, 285 Maple St.
Officers responded to the
pool at about 8 p.m. to meet with Manchester Fire Hazmat, which had
discovered the four bombs.
One of the two-liter plastic bottles had already
exploded, but three were still intact. Firefighters said the bottles
contained battery acid and a piece of tinfoil, a combination that
results in a chemical reaction that causes pressure to build and the
capped bottles to explode, spewing acid.
After the
bottle bombs were neutralized, the fire department hazmat unit retrieved
the bottles and cleaned up the spill and debris.

TEAM CALLED TO ACID SPILL AT MONTVILLE PLANT

A hazardous materials team was called to Smurfit-Stone
Container Corp. on Wednesday afternoon to deal with an acid spill at the
plant, according to the fire marshal.
No one
was injured, Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said.
Occhialini said it happened about 3:45 p.m., when 10 gallons
of an organic acid used for water treatment spilled in the back of a
tractor-trailer and onto a nearby loading dock.
He said
investigators from the state Department of Environmental Protection
entered the 125 Depot Road facility with special suits to assess the
situation before clearing the scene around 6 p.m.

TYNESIDE FACTORY HIT BY CHEMICAL ALERT

NEARLY
fifty firefighters turned up at a Tyneside firm today after a chemical
alert.
The crews arrived at Rohm and Haas, in Chaytor Street,
Jarrow, South Tyneside, just after 7am today.
There had
been a report of a leak of chlorine.
Fourteen fire engines from
South Shields, Hebburn, Gateshead, Newcastle and North Tyneside were put
on emergency stand-by at the site.
A spokesman from the Tyne
and Wear fire and rescue service said: =93We received a report of a
chemical leak at the plant at around 7.10am.
=93There
were 14 appliances, 48 firefighters and two officers dispatched to the
area.
=93There was a light leak from a chlorine bulk storage
container which activated the detection system and instigated procedures
to isolate the plant.
=93The Tyne and Wear Rescue Service was mobilised as a
precaution.

WANDERS INTO FIRE STATION AFTER CHEMICAL SPRAY

This morning, a man wandered into Fire Station 7 in
Washington Square requesting EMS. Hazmat also responded to the site. It
seems he was passing a compactor in front of a nearby hardware store as
it was crushing an aerosol spray paint can, and was then sprayed in the
face by the contents.
He
complained of respiratory issues, but because he was wearing sunglasses,
the spray did not affect his eyes. Police are issuing citations to the
business.

SPILLED, FIRE SET AT EDINA COUNTRY CLUB

A
substantial amount of damage was done to the green surrounding the Edina
County Club's 10th hole late last week, including a smattering of bird
seed, chemical spills and a small fire.
Police
said the 10th hole was filled with lighter fluid or some other
accelerant, then lit on fire sometime between 6 p.m. Thursday, June 2,
and 5 a.m. Friday, June 3. The same accelerant was spilled in several
other locations near the hole, according to police.
Police
Spokeswoman Molly Anderson said there was also burnt bark inside of the
cup when officers surveyed the scene.

Hillside firefighters and
hazardous materials teams were on the scene this morning of a "chemical
spill" on Mannheim Road in the West suburb.
The
chemical spill at 200 N. Mannheim Road was being classified as a Level 3
Hazmat situation, according to a spokesman for the Hillside Fire
Department.
Reports
indicated there was a hydrofluoric leak shortly before midnight, but the
spokesman could not verify that information and could only say there was
a chemical leak at the Mannheim Road address.

SPILL CLOSES 2 BUILDINGS AT BGSU

BOWLING GREEN =97 Two academic buildings on Bowling
Green State University=92s campus were temporarily closed Wednesday
after a chemical spill investigation that revealed no
danger.
The sciences building, where the custodial staff
mopped over a powder that turned brown in a classroom, and the nearby
psychology building were closed for several hours as a precaution, said
Bonnie Blankinship, a university marketing official.
A
hazardous-materials crew and the Bowling Green Fire Department
investigated the spill. It is unknown whether the spill was accidental
or intentional, he said.
