DES PERES, Mo. -- An 11-year-old St. Louis County boy has been turned over to juvenile authorities after making a crude explosive device that caused a brief scare at a police station.

KMOV-TV ( http://bit.ly/QWEYe7) reports that parents of the boy discovered their son had made a bomb of flammable liquid in a plastic bottle. Unsure what to do with it, the parents took it to the Des Peres Police Department.

Officers realized the bomb posed a risk so they called in the fire department's hazmat unit, which diffused the device.

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. Additional hazmat crews were requested to clean up an oil spill on East 64th and Washington Street Thursday afternoon.
At around 11:25 a.m., Colorado State Patrol confirmed a semi truck spilled 400 gallons of oil along a three-block area, closing the intersection's turn lane.
Troopers say the truck didn't crash, but a seal broke causing fuel to leak along the road. Some oil did get into the storm drain, however it is not clear how much oil got into the drain before crews could plug it up.
The Tri-County Health Department and the owner of the semi company were on the scene cleaning up the spill. There were no injuries and no other accidents reported.

In another industrial accident in Punjab, six workers were charred to death and 13 others seriously injured when a gas boiler in a soap-oil manufacturing factory in Khanna exploded on Tuesday night.
Deputy commissioner Rahul Tiwari who, along with Khanna SSP Ravcharan Brar and officials of the civil administration, rushed to the spot, has marked a magisterial inquiry into the incident to Khanna sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Purshotam Singh Sodhi. The SDM has been asked to submit the inquiry report within a week.

The factory, Sanjeev Agro Food Pvt Ltd, owned by Naval Aggarwal of Khanna, makes oil used in the manufacture of soap from paddy husk. According to eyewitnesses, a huge explosion occurred in the factory at around midnight, followed by a fire which engulfed the entire premises and reduced the unit to ashes.
....
Sodhi said the factory owner suspected that the blast might have occurred due to some lapse on the part of workers in operating the boiler, which contained hexane, a highly inflammable gas.
"Forensic experts from Chandigarh examined the spot to ascertain the reason behind the blast, but they are yet to identify the cause. They will now take the assistance of other experts," said the SDM

ARLINGTON A teacher and five students at Arlington High School were taken to the hospital early Wednesday afternoon after they were overcome by fumes during an biochemistry lab exercise.

The district declined to identify the six people, citing privacy rules. Students indicated in Twitter posts that the teacher was Brandi Bastas.

Assistant Fire Chief Jim Self said that one of the five students was referred to the hospital by a parent. The others, along with the teacher, were taken by ambulance and were in stable condition, he said.

The incident happened just before lunchtime while the students in the International Baccalaureate class were performing lab work on identifying proteins and amino acids. One of the last chemical compounds they used contained a small amount of cyanide, but Self said that fire investigator quickly ruled out the poisonous substance as a "primary player" in the incident..

"During the four-step lab process, they had an unanticipated reaction," he said.

Junior Karen Ortiz, who was in the class, said 20 to 30 students were in the room. After the teacher became sickened and left the room, she said, an assistant principal came and told the students to leave. Students were advised to see the school nurse if they felt ill, Ortiz said.

The district declined to discuss the specific details of the incident. Self said that he was satisfied with the safety protocols followed and the response of the fire department's hazardous materials team.

The lab is expected to be open Thursday.
