CHEMICAL SPILL PROMPTS INVESTIGATION AT MSU‰??S F-RIB FACILITY
Tags: us_MI, laboratory, release, injury, unknown_chemical

EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) ‰?? Employees were working with a chemical they‰??ve used before inside a building that is part of MSU‰??s F-RIB facility.

‰??It‰??s standard procedure within the operation of the facility, so nothing special that they did or didn‰??t try out,‰?? said Georg Bollen, Experimental Systems Divisions, director, F-RIB.

F-RIB‰??s experimental systems director says something went wrong when employees tried to neutralize or throw away a chemical. A strong odor soon emerged.

‰??I don‰??t think we really know what happened.‰??

What did happen though soon after the odor developed, was an alarm went off, alerting the 10 employees inside to quickly exit the building.

One was taken the hospital as a precaution.

University police and East Lansing fire were called in to keep people at a distance, even making sure 6 News didn‰??t get too close as the odor spread outside.

‰??This is what we practice for, we have the chemistry building on campus, we‰??ve had responses to the chemistry building, so this is nothing out of the ordinary,‰?? said Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor, Michigan State Police.

Both Michigan State Police as well as the Experimental Systems director at F-RIB say this is an example of following proper procedure, in case something goes wrong to immediately exit the building.

‰??Once the alarm went off the employees evacuated the building as they should.‰??

‰??For whatever reason things can sometimes go wrong and we don‰??t know exactly always what the reason is, but the important thing is when someone notices something wrong that they reacted in the right way.‰??

That‰??s exactly what happened. Everyone managed to get out safely, leaving environmental and health crews now to figure out how it all happened in the first place.

The Experimental Systems director says they‰??ll be looking at changing procedures for throwing away chemicals in the facility if they need to, following the investigation‰??s outcome.

LEXINGTON: SMALL LEAK OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL AFTER TANKER CRASH IN LEXINGTON COUNTY
Tags: us_SC, transportation, release, response, other_chemical

LEXINGTON ‰?? Lexington School District Two briefly sheltered students in place as a precaution Tuesday after a tanker overturned in the area, according to District spokeswoman Kay Joseph.

"They were dismissed a little ahead of their normal dismissal time as parents and buses arrived to take students home," Joseph said.

The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) said the truck that overturned at Pine Ridge Drive at Fish Hatchery Road swas carrying isobutyl acetate, a chemical used as a thinning agent in the manufacture of sealants and lacquers, and in making perfumes and as a flavoring agent.

A contractor for the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control inspected the scene of the overturned truck and has now determined that there was a "very small leak from the tanker." Booms were placed around the area to contain the spilled material, DHEC said.

Firefighters said all three men injured were alert and conscious following the fire.

One man suffered burns to his hands and face and was taken to a local hospital to be treated. The other two were also taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure for chemical inhalation.

According to firefighters, the facility's carbon dioxide suppression system was able to immediately extinguish the flames.

DOZENS OF HOMES TEMPORARILY EVACUATED FOLLOWING MASSIVE TANKER TRUCK FIRE IN CAMDEN COUNTY
Tags: us_NJ, transportation, fire, response, unknown_chemical

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (CBS) ‰?? Families from 30 Pennsauken homes were temporarily evacuated Monday as a tanker truck fire sent burning fuel spilling toward several houses and thick black smoke filled the neighborhood.
‰??When I looked out the window the only thing I saw was the tires way up in the air on fire and they were coming to my yard,‰?? says Rocky Rodriguez who lives on the 8000 block of Wynham Road.
Flames reached Rodriguez back fence before firefighters were able to use chemical foam to extinguish the fire.
Christina Flanagan‰??s home backs up directly to the Route 90 off ramp where the tanker caught fire, so after a house shaking explosion, she grabbed her pets and ran.
‰??We got out right away, I seen the flames going towards the yard so I was like I have to get out,‰?? Flanagan says, ‰??It was scary, I‰??m just happy we got everyone out okay.‰??
By early evening every resident was permitted to return home with the instructions if they felt sick from lingering fumes they should leave their house and call 9-1-1.

BUTANE HONEY OIL EXPLOSION CAUSE OF KNIGHTS INN FIRE
Tags: us_CA, public, explosion, response, butane, drugs

A butane honey oil explosion in one of the rooms at the Knights Inn in Palm Springs was the cause of the fire Sunday, Palm Springs authorities said Monday.

At 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, Palm Springs police and fire departments responded to a structure fire at 1450 S. Palm Canyon Dr. and, upon arriving, saw smoke coming from one of the rooms. Police found the four people who had been in the room at the time of the explosion in the nearby parking lot.

Police learned that one of the subjects was attempting to manufacture Butane Honey Oil (BHO) inside of the room when the explosion occurred, Sgt. Harvey Reed said in a news release.

BHO is an extremely potent form of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects, Reed said in the release.

BABY DIES, FOUR CHILDREN IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL IN FORT MCMURRAY, ALTA., APARTMENT
Tags: Canada, public, release, death, pesticides, phosphine

An eight-month-old baby is dead and four children remained in critical condition Monday night after a chemical spill in a family's apartment in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Emergency crews evacuated the third floor of the apartment building at 3 p.m. Sunday after the children were taken to hospital.

Regional Emergency Services (RES) confirmed Monday that the chemical was a poisonous substance called phosphine, which is used as an insecticide.

"The danger is that it's regulated and it's regulated for a reason," said Brad Grainger, RES deputy chief of operations. "With this type of exposure and the time that the family was exposed to it, it just continued to compound the issue is what it ended up doing."

Two children, ages two and six, were transported to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton by air ambulance. Their father is with them. The two other children, ages four and seven, are in a Fort McMurray hospital with their mother, who remains under observation.

Police said the family went to the hospital with a sample of the chemical. The hospital notified the fire department, who called in the RCMP and a dangerous goods team.

Three persons were charred to death and one severely injured after a major fire broke out at a chemical factory situated in Padra, some 20 kilometres from Vadodara. The fire broke out late Monday night and could not be controlled till early Tuesday morning, police said.
The company, Shiva Pharmachem Limited, manufactures chemicals including alkaline chloride, sodium hydroxide, sulphur dioxide, among other solutions and acids that are used in making pharmaceutical and agrichemical products. The factory is situated at Luna village in Vadodara‰??s Padra taluka.
According to police, the company‰??s unit manufacturing sodium hydroxide caught fire with a loud blast on Monday night, though the cause of fire was yet to be ascertained. The intensity of fire was such that people from far off villages could see it raging in the sky and hundreds of them gathered outside the factory, hampering rescue operation, police said.

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) ‰?? For the first time, we‰??re hearing from the lawyer of a Springboro man whose home is now an EPA cleanup site.

He says he wants the public to know how sorry he is that the situation has escalated to this point.

Forklifts and clean up crews can be seen on Jacamar Court in Springboro. The aftermath of a home destroyed by a fire.

It‰??s what was found inside the home that has raised concerns for neighbors and brought out the Environmental Protection Agency.

‰??Its very unusual to see the EPA come in and declare a homestead to be a super fund sight‰?? said Anthony Cicero, homeowner‰??s attorney.

A sentiment echoed by the EPA on-scene coordinator 2 NEWS spoke with. Crews found acids, solvents and mercury inside the house.

Chemicals the homeowner‰??s lawyer believes were used for hobbies.

‰??He‰??s a man of many interests. His interests include dentistry, chemistry, electronics. He did not have anything in his home that was of any significant quantity. They were in a controlled environment and now their not‰?? said Cicero.
