Reporting to the Vice President Facilities Management, this position has overall responsibilities for the day-to-day planning, coordination, administration and management of EHS functions for NSU campuses. Additionally is responsible for developing and/or administering policies and procedures, and budgetary decisions.

The EHS department provides safety oversight and compliance assistance to the NSU multi-campus community in various areas including: laboratory/research safety; chemical safety; radiation safety; biological safety; fire/life safety; industrial hygiene; occupational health; and environmental compliance, among others. The purpose of this position is to provide management and oversight for the EHS, programs and personnel.
1. Works closely with the Vice President Facilities Management to coordinate and facilitate work needed for compliance with federal, state and local regulations affecting institutional operations.

2. Promotes, facilitates, and provides expert consultation, direction, and strategic planning for EHS programs in support of both academic and non-academic university functions.

3. Leads, manages, supervises, recruits, mentors, and motivates a dedicated, diverse, and skilled staff.

4. Works collaboratively with administrators, faculty, researchers, staff, and students to ensure institutional operations are conducted safely and in compliance with all applicable EHS laws and regulations.

5. Advises the university community of responsibilities with respect to health, safety and environmental issues and recommending appropriate correction actions.

6. Conducts EHS and risk hazard evaluations/audits; generates corrective action proposals.

7. Monitors compliance for all EHS programs intended to minimize or prevent hazards, exposures, injuries, and illnesses in the workplace, and to protect the quality of the surrounding environment.

8. Monitors EHS programs for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

9. Leads the development and implementation of new EHS programs.

10. Serves as the NSU liaison with various external agencies and regulatory bodies.

11. Serves and/or contributes guidance and support to various university committees and/or councils related to environmental health and safety.

12. Manages the EHS operating budget.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Knowledge and experience using chemical inventory management software and/or other similar EHS management systems.

2. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in planning, developing, tracking, and continually improving EHS policies and procedures.

3. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in planning, developing, implementing, and delivering EHS training workshops and seminars.

4. Advanced knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; database and data entry skills.

5. Ability to establish relationships with high level internal and external customers.
Bachelor's Degree
Environmental Health/Engineering/Industrial Safety Science/Industrial Hygiene/Biology/Chemistry
Minimum 7 or more years of experience in educational or medical laboratory Environmental Health and Safety
Master's Degree and ten or more years' equivalent work experience plus

1. Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or

2. Certified Safety Professional, and/or

3. Certified Health Professional, and/or

4. Registered or Certified Biosafety Professional, and/or

5. Professional Engineer.

6. Experience in a university or higher education environment
