This is a good question. It appears to me to be evolving.
Our own rules have evolved from "closed toe" to closed shoes that must cover the foot (front, back & top).
One of our lab instructors does not allow any porous materials, such as canvas, in his labs (Advanced O-CHEM), but this has not become a general rule. In training, I strongly recommend non-porous materials.

Just curious, if chem resistant (I'm assuming the yellow, plastic coated variety) tyvek isn't enough, and folks are calling for leather or a plastic cup (clever by the way) for a foot
covering, what are the other students in undergraduate chemistry required to wear? For instance, I think most of us require closed toe shoes, but are canvas-topped sneakers, like Chuck Taylors, acceptable?. Do these no longer meet the standard of care?

Liquids could soak through the booties, so I don't think they are a reasonable choice. Students often suggest duct tape around a sock of some sort, but I do not allow that either. Depending on the cast/boot involved, we have allowed leather ballet slippers if they provide adequate coverage of the toes and other parts of the foot are adequately covered by the other parts of the slipper or by the boot itself.

I would like to know what policies/procedures others have regarding students who are in leg casts where the toes are exposed during undergraduate chemistry lab. One option was shoe cover booties. Any other ideas? We do not currently have a procedure for this.
