SOLARCITY PRESENTS UNIQUE POSSIBLE CHEMICAL FIRE HAZARD
Tags: us_NY, industrial, discovery, environmental, unknown_chemical

The SolarCity complex in South Buffalo is getting intense attention from the Buffalo Fire Department, looking for safety in construction and operation in the future.

The mammoth plant is being watched as construction continues because firefighters have to approve some parts of construction, like sprinkler systems, and because firefighters have to know and understand the plant and what is inside, in case something goes wrong.

Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says there is special concern because there are very exotic and very dangerous chemicals inside.

"They have very, very, very, very dangerous chemicals within the plant that are used in the production process. Some of those things are very volatile, lighter than air, but very volatile," said Whitfield. "Some of them are air-reactive. Some of them are very caustic, are very dangerous if they get on your skin. So there are some very, very dangerous materials that are being brought into that plant."

CARTERET - A Port Carteret Drive site continues to be monitored following a report of an early morning chemical spill.

Around 2:09 a.m. Tuesday, the Carteret Fire Department responded to Port Carteret Drive in the industrial zone for a report of a chemical spill in a 500,000-square-foot facility operated by Vanguard Logistics Services, according to Mayor Dan Reiman's Facebook posting.

In the posting, Reiman said the property is owned by Freeport McMoRan.

Firefighters found that a chemical storage drum had ruptured and the contents in three other drums had become unstable and were emitting fumes, Reiman said in the posting.

The Carteret Fire Department secured the area and, as a precautionary measure, closed Port Carteret Drive and evacuated the adjacent commercial buildings.

Reiman said the Carteret Fire Department remained at the scene late Tuesday along with representatives of Middlesex County Hazmat and representatives of the state Department of Environmental Protection.

ALL CLEAR GIVEN IN DANGEROUS CHEMICAL SPILL IN HICKORY COUNTY

WHEATLAND, Mo. Emergency Management Director Carolyn Ream says a large amount of anhydrous ammonia spilled along County Road 189 just north of Highway 254. Wheatland Volunteer Fire Chief Herman Galli says the gas came from a farm tank behind a tractor. He says the heat may have played a factor in the leak.

Galli says some people were evacuated, and Ream says everyone else who lives near the scene were told to stay in their homes with their windows closed and air conditioners off.

The Springfield Fire Department's hazardous materials team was called in to assist with the leak, but about 11:00 p.m. the Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department told us the all clear had been given.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) -

A chemical spill at Culligan Water on College Avenue in Elmira has shut down an industrial park.

Hazmat teams in full gear were sent inside the building to shut off the leak. Cleanup is now underway.

Units from the Elmira fire department's Emergency Services Unit, Elmira Heights Fire, Chemung County Fire Emergency Management Office, Webb Mills Fire Department and Elmira police all responded to the scene.

The type of chemical has not yet been released.

Workers at a south Auckland transport business have had to be decontaminated after several became unwell from the use of degreaser.

The Fire Service said it was called to KPH Transport in Karaka Rd, Drury at about 2.55pm on Tuesday.

Three people became unwell in the company's cooler area after using the degreaser cleaning agent, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Fire trucks and a hazmat unit responded to the scene.

St John ambulance northern region spokesman Robbie Walker said nine patients - one in a serious condition - were seen in total.

JURORS TO DECIDE BLAME IN DUPONT, CHEMICAL ILLNESS LAWSUIT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jurors in an Ohio federal court are poised to decide whether DuPont"s C8 chemical caused a man to get cancer and - if so - whether it acted in "conscious disregard" by dumping it from its plant in West Virginia into the Ohio River.
The Columbus Dispatch reports (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_29h9Kov&d=DQIFaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=QbGPq3MZmDlapl0wmhnT92xgJqzrdhzMkXuz0yoLWk4&s=bifLB6kwwnAaArxPTLTV1upFbNrIellegzbKvIeB7L8&e= ">https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_29h9Kov&d=DQIFaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=QbGPq3MZmDlapl0wmhnT92xgJqzrdhzMkXuz0yoLWk4&s=bifLB6kwwnAaArxPTLTV1upFbNrIellegzbKvIeB7L8&e= ) testimony in the Columbus courtroom concluded last week in the case against the Delaware-based chemical company. Jurors are expected to begin deliberations on Tuesday.
There are 3,500 lawsuits alleging a link between illnesses and the company"s discharging of the chemical into the river.
In this case, David Freeman, of Washington County, says he got testicular cancer because of C8, which was used to make Teflon.
Freeman, 56, says in his lawsuit that residents along the river suffered from C8 in tainted drinking water, which he blamed for his sickness.
