Thanks, everyone, for your input and excellent summaries of potential pluses and deltas of these systems.  I’ve passed the information on up the food chain, with suitable caveats and references to Fire Code and the like.  We’ll see what happens.

 

I wanted to suggest to BruceV below, an option that might be helpful for preserved pathology samples.  I worked with the veterinary school on their management of these types of samples.  They had requirements for sample retention and the like and the little pots and jars of bits in preservative just weren’t cutting it.  We eventually settled on vacuum sealing the samples with a small amount of formalin/alcohol – think “Seal-A-Meal.”  Worked incredibly well.

Yes, I have had experience with this system storing chemicals, specifically 10% neutral buffered formalin in “Tupperware” equivalent containers.  We changed containers for better tight-fitting lids, but continued to have exposures >AL, due to the lack of airflow through the racks.  Spot ventilation was impossible, therefore had to rely upon dilution ventilation which if you check the design – makes this system problematic for any chemical storage.  My problem is that it was already paid for, installed and significantly used.  I would recommend considering the costs above initial purchase, to include: Occ Health Exams, routine IH monitoring, etc.
