Agreed, the expiration date is not top of mind for many labs . We've found several locations where calcium gluconate was expired and even one conscientious lab that removed the expired calcium gluconate tube that was normally taped above their fume hood so that they could look at the part number while ordering a replacement - but leaving a week-long gap without the tube present.

In the School of Engineering our approach is to use the chemical inventory to identify labs that have HF and to give them calcium gluconate. We manage this as a preventative maintenance program - i.e. the expiration dates are centrally tracked and replacements provided as needed.

The challenge I have found with this strategy is maintaining a useful stock on hand requires rotating the gel on a regular basis (annually? I think). The expiration dates are very difficult to track accurately from outside the lab where the HF is being used and should be the responsibility of the lab using the material. Then there's the expense of replacing the gel. Many people interested in using HF look at the catalog price of the solution they want to buy and assume that's the total cost. It's not...
