Seventeen years after 9/11, the CDC reports that almost 10,000 first responders and survivors have been diagnosed with cancer. Nearly 3,000 people died during the attack and some outlets report that "Deaths from 9/11 diseases will soon outnumber those lost on that fateful day."

Bridget Gormley lost her firefighter father years after 9/11. He died of 9/11 related cancer. She said, "It sounds a bit morbid when I say this, but if you think about it, it was the perfect terrorist attack because you killed so many people that day, but not only that. Now you have this lasting effect that's going. And it's going to be multi-generations. There are kids that are being born with issues now, too."

For hundreds of FBI employees and their families, the anniversary of 9/11 magnifies anxieties that haunt them to this day.

FBI first responders and those involved in the investigation of the worst terror attack in U.S. history continue to be diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. The FBI, doctors and health experts say toxic exposure from fumes, dust and chemicals at the crash sites are the likely cause.

As of the 17th anniversary of the attacks on Tuesday, 15 FBI agents have died from cancers linked to their roles in the 9/11 investigation. Three of them have died in just the last six months.

Maryland hazmat crews are working to contain a sodium hydroxide spill on Snow Hill Road in Girdletree in Worcester County after a tractor-trailer overturned Tuesday.

Maryland State Police said in a news release late Tuesday the road is currently closed and will remain so until dawn Wednesday as crews work to tackle the spill.

Police said sodium hydroxide is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns. It is highly soluble in water, and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.

The crash happened at around 4:45 p.m., state police said in a news release.

Troopers from the the state police Berlin Barrack responded to 3323 Snow Hill Road in Girdletree for a report of an overturned tractor trailer and hazardous material spill.

Initial investigation revealed that the tractor-trailer was transporting 10 containers filled with 330 gallons each of sodium hydroxide.

A fire broke out at the factory of Kemiko Pharmaceuticals Limited in Rajshahi city's Tikapara area yesterday, damaging its electric supply machines worth Tk 45 lakh.

The blaze was triggered at 11:45am from a transmitter blast at the factory's generator room and engulfed the building, Forhad Hossain, station officer of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence said.

However, three fire fighting units from Rajshahi Sadar, Nawhata and Rajshahi University doused the flames arrived at the scene by 11:55am with five fire trucks, and doused the fire in about 40 minutes. ‰??We managed to save the factory's laboratory building from the fire,‰?? he said.

RIVERTON FIRE COULD CAUSE HEALTH ISSUES, NEPA AIR QUALITY REPORT FINDS
http://rjrnewsonline.com/local/riverton-fire-could-cause-health-issues-nepa-air-quality-report-finds
Tags: Jamaica, public, fire, response, waste

An air quality study conducted during and after the Riverton city disposal site fire, which blanketed the Corporate Area with smoke for several days last month, has found that elevated levels of certain gases and particulate matter could have resulted in possible health impacts, especially to sensitive groups.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) released the report Tuesday afternoon.

It said, based on the findings, it is recommending that the associated health effects be provided by the Ministry of Health.

NEPA said samples were taken during the fire and after firefighting activities ended.

The samples were sent to an accredited laboratory in Canada for analysis.

NEPA's report concludes that the fire from the Riverton disposal facility resulted in deteriorated air quality that affected Southern St. Andrew and Kingston, as well as sections of South Eastern St. Catherine.

NEW PLANS TO IMPROVE TAP WATER QUALITY, CUT PLASTIC LITTER

The European Parliament‰??s Environment Committee has agreed that European Union member states should promote universal access to clean water for all. The MEPs backed new legislation aimed to tighten the maximum limits for certain pollutants such as lead (to be reduced by half), PFAS, harmful bacteria, and introduces new caps for endocrine disruptors Bisphenol A and Beta-estradiol (50-25-2).

Member states should also take measures to improve water access, such as setting up free fountains in cities and public places, where technically feasible and proportionate. They should also encourage tap water to be provided in restaurants, canteens and catering services for free or for a low service fee.

Following-up on their resolution on the citizens‰?? initiative Right2Water, MEPs stressed again that member states should focus on the needs of vulnerable groups in society. They should identify people without access, or with limited access to water, including vulnerable and marginalised groups, and assess ways to improve their access, informing them clearly about how to connect to the distribution network or about alternative means to have access to such water.

PFAS-RELATED CHEMICALS FOUND AT FORMER DUMP SITE IN ITHACA

hemicals in the PFAS family have been found at the former site of a landfill in Ithaca.

Testing at eight sites around the landfill was done by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality as part of the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team. It was done to check for groundwater contamination because a former Wolverine Worldwide plant existed in Ithaca and may or may not have disposed of leather trash or scrap during its operation. The chemicals could have gotten into the ground water because rain falling onto the leather and scraps could have washed away the chemicals, driving it toward the ground.

CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST UCLA PROFESSOR IN DEADLY LAB FIRE

LOS ANGELES, CA ‰?? Criminal charges stemming from a 2008 laboratory fire that killed a research assistant were dismissed against a UCLA chemistry professor last week, nine months earlier than expected and over the objection of prosecutors, the District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday.

Patrick Harran entered into a five-year deferred-prosecution agreement with the District Attorney's Office in 2014. Under the agreement, Harran was ordered to meet a series of requirements, including 800 hours of non- teaching community service at the UCLA Hospital System/UCLA Health Services.

Although that agreement was not scheduled to end until next June, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George Lomeli ruled during a hearing last Thursday that Harran had already met all the terms of the agreement, and he dismissed the criminal case against him, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Greg Risling, spokesman for the District Attorney's Office, said prosecutors objected to the dismissal, which was granted "nine months earlier when the case was set to be dismissed."

Harran, who still works at UCLA, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A fire scene can be dangerous enough with the fire and the smoke.

Now add in potentially cancer-causing materials, and you've got a hot mess.

According to a study done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health firefighters showed a higher rate of certain types of cancers than other people.

With the fact in mind, fire chiefs like West Ridge Chief, Dan Ouellet do everything they can to prevent any toxic material from seeping in.

They wear breathing masks and protective clothing and try to wash their gear afterward.

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WBTW) ‰?? Midway Fire Rescue says crews have a fire in Pawleys Island under control.

According to a tweet from the department, crews are on scene at the water and sewer plant at 464 Clearwater Drive ‰??for an unknown explosion and fire.‰?? Officials say there are no structures burning at the moment, but a debris fire caused Hazmat crews to respond just after 10 a.m.

Fire officials say the fire is under control and, after further investigation, the blaze does not involve hazardous materials.

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) - A number of roads are blocked after a hazmat situation in Lakeland, officials said.

Janel Vasallo of Lakeland Fire Department said someone bought an old-fashioned safe at a garage sale and brought it to the Wildwood Antique Mall on US-98. Vasallo said these types of safes, which were made in the 1940s, are outfitted with a chemical theft-deterrent device that can leak tear gas.

The safe is located in the parking lot inside of the person's car, Vasallo said.

As a precaution, firefighters along with a hazmat team and the Tampa Bomb Squad are at the mall to monitor the safe and prevent any potential exposure to tear gas.

TOXIC FLAME-RETARDANT BAN HEADS TO GOVERNOR FOR SIGNATURE

The HBO documentary Toxic Hot Seat (2013) ‰?? a damning indictment of toxic fire-retardant chemicals in our furniture, environment and bodies (spoiler: It‰??s California‰??s fault) ‰?? ends on a triumphant note. It‰??s 2013 and Gov. Jerry Brown is talking, vaguely, about how ‰??every reform needs a reform,‰?? pledging to support regulatory updates that will end the state‰??s de facto fire-retardant requirement in furniture manufacturing (the original regulation, Technical Bulletin 117, was implemented during his first term in the 1970s).

Pulitzer-winning investigative reporters and the original scientists behind TB 177 handily deflate the chemical industry‰??s claims that its products are indispensable to fire safety. A firefighter who survived cancer ‰?? one of a disproportionate number afflicted from exposure to toxic fumes worsened by burning fire retardants ‰?? smiles and rides his bike through a slice of California sunshine. It feels like progress.

5 BEST PRACTICES FOR EXTRACTION LABORATORY SAFETY
http://www.cannabisbusinesstimes.com/article/5-best-practices-for-extraction-laboratory-safety/
Tags: public, discovery, environmental, clandestine_lab

Cannabis extraction has a dark history of burned-down apartment buildings, exploded cabins, toxic byproducts in extracts, and oils of questionable quality. With a maturing industry that is stepping out of the shadows and into regulatory oversight, many of those dangers will be mitigated through rules and regulations, but a large burden still lies with the extraction operator.

Operators have reduced the risk of commercial cannabis extractors burning down due to compliance and the use of proven extraction practices, but that doesn‰??t mean one can be lackadaisical. Ignoring extraction safety can lead to the laboratory literally exploding, making you legally liable for staff injuries and potentially dooming your professional cannabis career.

Here are five tips to help ensure that no security measure is forgotten.
