The University of Pennsylvania now has an open position for a Laboratory Safety Specialist in the Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety!

This position is in the area of research safety and compliance, but preference will be given to candidates with first-hand laboratory-research experience.  This would be an excellent opportunity for anyone with a lab background who wants to make the move to research safety.  Prior experience in safety and compliance is a plus, but isn't required.  Duties and qualifications are listed below.

The Laboratory Safety Specialist will be a member of the Industrial Hygiene/Lab Safety Group and will provide support to the research community by:

         Inspecting research and teaching lab facilities for compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations and national consensus guidelines pertaining to the use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials;

         Providing written recommendations to improve processes, experimental design, procedures, and equipment to minimize the hazard potential;

         Conducting evaluations of fume hoods;

         Supporting the campus's chemical inventory program;

         Developing and presenting various safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students;

         Conducting follow-up and reporting for Lab Safety Events (incidents and near misses) to identify root causes and corrective actions.

The Laboratory Safety Specialist will also provide support to the EHRS emergency response team and respond (on call) to hazardous materials incidents on a rotating basis.

Qualifications:

         The position requires a B.S. degree in a lab-science discipline (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) or a related field with a minimum 1 - 2 years of safety-related experience or laboratory technician experience, preferably in a research facility.

         The individual must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office.

         Must be able to move about freely and carry up to 50 pounds; must be able to wear respiratory protection, including SCBA.

         Valid driver's license is required.
