MOHALI: The recent fire incidents at industrial units in Derabassi have prompted deputy commissioner (DC) Girish Dayalan to order a safety audit of 73 chemical units in the district, seeking a report within 15 days.
The DC issued the orders while chairing a meeting with representatives of various industrial associations at the District Administrative Complex, Sector 76, on Tuesday.
Additional deputy commissioner (G) Sakshi Sawhney, sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) Jagdeep Saigal, Vinod Bansal, Pooja Grewal and assistant commissioner (G) Yashpal Sharma were present.
Expressing concern over the recent fires, the DC said the audit would bring out readiness of industries to tackle incidents besides highlighting if they have requisite arrangements in place to ensure safety of its employees.

Two employees of a rubber parts manufacturing unit at Kuranwala village in Dera Bassi were injured in a fire on Monday.

This is second industrial mishap in Dera Bassi in three days. On Saturday, a pharma unit at Saidpura village was razed to the ground following a chemical reactor blast, leaving 16 people injured.

The two employees who sustained burn injuries in the Monday blaze were working in the paint shop of the unit when sparks from a short-circuit fell on a thinner drum, which led to the fire.

Identified as Amit Kumar and Imran Khan of Bihar, they were admitted to the local civil hospital with 10-15% burn injuries. They are said to be out of danger now.

Residents are raising fresh questions over the safety record of an industrial facility in Cobb County following revelations about an explosion that injured a worker there, and an unreported leak of toxic gas.
The unrelated incidents both occurred in 2018 at the Sterigenics plant on Olympic Industrial Drive near Smyrna, well before the plant‰??s ethylene oxide emissions drew public attention for the chemical‰??s link to cancer. The facility uses the carcinogenic gas to sterilize medical equipment. At a meeting with county commissioners Monday, Sterigenics President Phil Macnabb acknowledged the explosion inside the plant on July 10 of that year.‰??There was an immediate combustion and an employee was injured,‰?? Macnabb said. ‰??He‰??s in recovery ‰?| We‰??re looking forward to getting that employee back soon.‰??
