Save the dates for Chemical Safety Workshops!

May 20/21, Lexington, KY.

July 25/26, Oklahoma City, OK  (In conjunction with the NAOSMM Conference!)

Midwest Chemical Safety will be offering both Effective Chemical Safety Management: A Risk Based Perspective and Why it went wrong: Blame-Free Incident Investigations of lab-scale incidents in Lexington, KY and Oklahoma City, OK.

Effective Chemical Safety Management: A Risk-Based Perspective is designed for those responsible for chemical safety in their workplace. After an initial introduction to the Laboratory Standard and Chemical Hygiene Plans, we will cover introductory toxicology, fundamental laboratory chemical hood evaluation, standard operating procedure development and the importance of waste management.  We will then move deep into hazard vs. risk then introduce and use a variety of risk management tools such as the LabRAT and “What-If” as we evaluate common laboratory and field scientific work.  The day will be wrapped up a session of “Ask Dr. Safety” so that participants can get their EH&S questions answered before we wrap up.

Why it went wrong is an introduction to formal incident investigation. Many scholarly and practical publications are available addressing incident investigation.  None, however, are devoted strictly to the unique environment of laboratories.  The purpose of this workshop is to provide methods for investigating laboratory-scale incidents to elucidate the underlying (root) causes as well as direct and contributing causes to those incidents. Participants will learn methods for conducting investigations and to how to structure a report using a blame-free approach. Presentation methods will include both lecture/discussion and role-playing incident investigations. We will study incident investigations of several well-documented actual events and practice investigation skills in presented scenarios.

Registration information for each of these workshops can be found on the Midwest Chemical Safety Website:

Workshop registration is $350 per workshop or register for both for $650.

May 20/21: Georgetown-Lexington Fairfield Inn. 200 Tiger Way, Georgetown, KY.  We have arranged a block of room at the Georgetown-Lexington Fairfield Inn for $119/night plus tax.

July  25/26:  Workshop will be held in conjunction with NAOSMM meeting.  Location to be announced soon.

All workshops require a minimum of 5 participants in order to be presented (“Confirmed”).  Go/No-go date is 21 April for Lexington and 6 July for the July Workshops.  Register early to ensure the workshops will be presented.  (Once the workshops are confirmed, a “CONFIRMED” announcement will be made and participants will be notified.)
