Having taught General Chemistry Lab for non-majors, I'd say my concern is not for the ones who are excessively afraid of chemicals, it's the occasional one who has no fear at all and thinks s/he's on Breaking Bad. The variety of ways people can misread what appear to be perfectly clear directions is mind-boggling.


I recall my own organic I lab, back in the Medieval Period, where I witnessed a fellow student pick up a reagent bottle, say loudly, "What's this? Ether?", stick his nose in it and ***SNORT***. He had just enough time to put the bottle down before he collapsed in a faint. I am certain we all can think of liquids for which the consequences might have been much worse.

The rising chemophobia among the younger generation, though (good grief, did I just say "the younger generation?" I'M the "younger generation�") probably has several sources: constant (often ignorant) media drumbeat about "hazardouschemicals" (one word), general anti-science-ism among the populace (and political leaders), and possibly our own tendency in health & safety to tell the horror stories like the above because they get attention. I suspect the over-standardization of the science curriculum may also contribute�I don't think there's really much Common Core material that actually looks critically at the dangers and benefits of chemicals in society. It would be nice if more schools used books like the ACS Chemistry in the Community tome.

That's getting a bit far afield, though, from the original question. Recovering gold is probably not a good idea for a lower division undergrad class, but perhaps there are other analogous experiments that would illustrate how such as thing is done. Anybody know what it takes to recover the neodymium from a magnet, maybe (I'm looking for ideas here�rare-earth chemistry, though fascinating, is not my forte).

Why shouldn't we attempt interesting chemical transformations and processes that engage, inspire, excite the next generations of chemical scientists? All of our wet chemical work is not at the level of even weak Piranha solutions yet we do bring out the conc acids once in a while so that they LEARN how to handle them rather than not. UGs need to learn how to navigate these spaces.

It comes as no surprise (to me, at least) that the energy of our nation has dissipated during my lifetime and has moved to other parts of the globe. It happens (and happened) a little at a time. While we have made very important and substantial improvements in chemical work (broadly defined) in our country (I witnessed hand rinsing with acetone and was told the "old guys" used benzene similarly, oh boy) we've also tamped down some spark.

It seems we're sort of scared and chemistry is emblematic of the fear. Too bad for us.

I'd recommend selling the scrap. There are a wide variety of companies that recover gold, Pt, Ir, etc. from scrap, most commonly from electronics and spent catalysts. There's gold in them thar' PC boards, so naturally, there are gold miners too. A lot of copper as well, incidentally.

I'd consider that a better choice than a DIY approach; no waste that you're responsible for, and you don't have to deal with what is essentially weak Piranha solution, which isn't something suitable for undergraduates to work with. If there's somebody nearby who does that industrially, perhaps you could wangle a plant tour for the educational benefit.

Here's an article I found after a brief google search kind of outlining a process. I was hoping to give this a shot on a small scale and then maybe attempt something larger if I'm successful. But I need to know... Will following this article get me killed or result in a visit from the FBI??? I think it would be a fun, cool way to do a bit of chemistry and make the business I work for a bit of extra money off of some items that would otherwise just be thrown away, but I obviously want to do it in a safe, proper way
