KOLKATA: A major fire destroyed a chemistry lab at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) ' Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in Kolkata, on Monday afternoon. The 250 sq feet lab on the first floor of a building at the institute's Jadavpur campus was being used for research on an antiviral drug against Covid-19.
The IICB officials, however, hope that the project will not get hampered as the institute has another well-equipped chemical lab.
Around seven PhD scholars were working in the lab when the fire broke out on Monday. Different chemicals were stocked up in the lab, so the fire spread in no time. Officials said that the lab did not have expensive instruments.
'Ten fire tenders were pressed into the action to douse the blaze. There was a cylinder blast. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,' said fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose.
