https://www.indianaenvironmentalreporter.org/posts/epa-orders-some-firefighting-foam-makers-to-test-pfas-products-for-human-exposure-risks
Tags: industrial, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued orders to four manufacturers of PFAS firefighting foam to test how breathing in specific PFAS products affects humans.

The agency sent the testing orders to Chemours Co., DuPont de Nemours Inc., National Foam Inc. and Johnson Controls Inc., ordering them to determine how inhalation exposure to their firefighting foam products made with a PFAS chemical called 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide betaine affects humans.

PFAS chemicals are a group of thousands of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s to manufacture products resistant to water, fire, grease and stains.

The chemicals have been linked to increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers, increased cholesterol levels, increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, decreased birth weight and decreased vaccine response in children.

Fire crews are at the scene of a 'chemical incident' in Rochdale. Mellor Street, on the outskirts of the town centre, has been closed by police while around 25 firefighters deal with the spillage.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.20pm on Wednesday. Nearby residents were being advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just after 4:20pm this afternoon we were called to reports of a chemical incident on Mellor Street, Rochdale. Five fire engines and appliances from Rochdale, Heywood, and Bury fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene and remain in attendance.

"Occupants of the surrounding properties have been evacuated by firefighters, and crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel and specialist equipment to tackle the incident. Colleagues from Greater Manchester Police are maintaining road closures around the scene, and local residents are advised to avoid the area and keep all windows and doors closed while crews carry out their work."

In an updated statement, the fire service said the spillage took place at a commercial premises and involved a 'chemical leakage from a container onto concrete hardstanding', with the guidance on closing doors and windows lifted just after 6pm.

PROCESS SAFETY BEACON: SOME MISTAKES TAKE TIME TO BECOME INCIDENTS

Tags: industrial, release, response, corrosives, phosphorus_trichloride

A company decided to stop making a chemical product. One of the input materials was toxic and corrosive phosphorus trichloride (PCl3). The lines to the storage tank and the process area were cleared of PCl3. A few years later, an operator found a leak outdoors. The investigation found that the leak was coming from the ‰??empty‰?? PCl3 line. No one was injured and the spill was contained.

During the clearing and flushing steps to shut down the PCl3 facility, someone missed clearing or flushing that section of line. It took a while, but the material corroded the ‰??empty‰?? pipe and caused a release.

An operator may have mistakenly opened the wrong valve, realized the mistake, closed it, but never told anyone. In that short time, some material may have passed through that section of pipe. It is difficult to predict what or when something may happen, but it could cause a serious problem.

We typically think of catastrophic incidents as occurring quickly, like an explosion. However, many serious incidents have occurred months or even years after a mistake was made.

Tags: Greece, laboratory, discovery, response

The possibility of conducting laboratory experiments at home without using commercially available kits, which might also be overly expensive, seems to be a suitable approach for a distance chemistry laboratory. Thus, several hands-on experiments with household supplies have been developed aiming at fostering students‰?? laboratory competencies, as in a face-to-face chemistry laboratory course. This paper presents a scoping review mapping this type of experiments and identifying their characteristics to guide chemistry educators in using them with a more effective manner. The review includes the publications that have appeared as full-length articles in scientific journals during the period 1992‰??2021.

Karen Wetterhahn was a rising star in 1996. She was making key advances in understanding biochemical reactions of the heavy metal chromium and how those can cause disease. She had launched a major interdisciplinary research program to understand the effects of heavy-metal pollutants in northern New England. She was serving in top administrative positions at Dartmouth College. And a program for women in science that she helped found was being emulated around the country. Then a shocking lab accident halted her trajectory: on June 8, 1997, Wetterhahn died from dimethylmercury poisoning. Her legacies remain, however. Twenty-five years later, Wetterhahn‰??s colleagues and those who never knew her still feel her influences on laboratory safety, the scientific method, and women in science.

A district court handed state railway firm VR an 80,000 euro fine linked to a tanker derailment accident, resulting in the spillage of tonnes of the fuel additive MTBE.

The District Court of South Savo found the firm responsible for aggravated environmental damage in the incident that took place in the municipality of MÌ?ntyharju in the spring of 2018.

MTBE, or methyl tertiary-butyl ether, is a flammable, volatile and colourless liquid chiefly used as a petrol additive that among other things reduces emissions in combustion engines.

VR previously acknowledged in a written statement that the VR Transpoint logistics division ‰?? which was operating as a separate entity ‰?? was responsible for the offence.

In its decision, the court said the accident caused significant environmental pollution, a danger to public health and harmful changes to the environment. The pollution caused by the spill was also considered to be widespread and long-lasting.

The deaths of 13 fire fighters - the highest fatalities in a single fire incident - while tackling the blaze and explosions at the Sitakundu BM Container Depot, was due to the lack of proper information and also the wrong way of operating, officials said on Tuesday.

According to an official, 150 fire fighters were trained in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia on how to douse chemical fires and identifying chemicals in case of such a fire and have special equipment and chemical protection suits. Skilled fire fighters would not go so near a chemical fire, the official said.

The members of this team are stationed at the headquarters and divisional cities. As per the procedure, the fire fighters begin extinguishing the blaze if it is a normal fire. In the case of a chemical fire, the specially-trained hazmat (hazardous materials) unit would go with protective jackets.

But none of these 11 trained personnel of the hazmat unit in Agrabad, Chattogram went to Sitakunda industrial area or at Kumira Fire Station, the nearby fire station.
