Tags: us_WA, transportation, explosion, response, liquid_oxygen

raffic is moving again on southbound Interstate 5 near Mercer Street in Seattle on Thursday evening, after a truck carrying liquid oxygen caught fire and exploded several times.

The truck carrying the liquid oxygen displayed warning signs it was carrying volatile chemicals.

Plumes of smoke could be seen billowing in the air and from miles away, as the fiery scene initially shut down both sides of the freeway before 2 p.m.

The fire caused several explosions that could be heard by those nearby.

At one point, one of the tanks that exploded on the truck fell down the freeway‰??s bridge side and landed at a construction site, causing a small fire.

Hazmat teams are working to clean up fuel spills caused when multiple tractor-trailers crashed on a stretch of Interstate 81 in Lebanon County, according to PennDOT.

One crash, involving 15 vehicles, was reported around 4:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 86.5, according to state police Public Information Officer Trooper David Beohm. A second crash, involving multiple tractor-trailers and a passenger bus was reported within two miles of the original crash site.

As of 9:50 p.m., hazmat teams were still on scene, trying to pump away fuel spills from the tractor-trailers involved in the crashes, according to PennDOT Spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler.

Most of the vehicles involved have been cleared from the scene, Schreffler said, and backed-up traffic was also released except for the few tractor-trailers that chose to remain on the highway.

Officials have released more details about an airborne chemical leak over the weekend at an East St. Louis manufacturing plant.

A chemical transport trailer containing hydroxyethyl acrylate over-pressurized, possibly due to excessive heating, on Saturday morning at the Allnex USA, Inc. plant, spokeswomen for the company and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency said this week.

Someone who saw smoke coming from the trailer, which was parked at the fence line of the Missouri Avenue site, called the fire department at 6:30 a.m. The city asked residents to avoid the area or stay inside. First responders gave the all-clear around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Company and state officials say air and water monitoring near the plant have detected no ‰??off-site impacts.‰??

ELGIN, S.C. (WIS) -After a chemical leak Thursday at its facility in Kershaw County shut down parts of the interstate for several hours and led to some evacuations, WeylChem US Inc. identified the chemical as a vapor mixture of nitric acid and nitrogen oxides.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, it is unlikely that anyone would experience health impacts from this incident.

‰??However, anyone with any health concerns or questions is encouraged to talk with a healthcare provider,‰?? DHEC said in a statement.

The Kershaw County Fire Service said it first responded to a call about smoke coming from the WeylChem plant in Elgin around 6 p.m. Thursday.

ELGIN ‰?? A toxic chemical spill from a Kershaw County plant led to evacuation of residents and closure of a major interstate for four hours on July 27.

Local fire crews and hazardous materials teams worked to contain the leak of nitric acid at the WeylChem plant while nearby residents were evacuated, Elgin Mayor Melissa Emmons said. The spill occurred around 6 p.m. when workers could not close a valve, she said.

Authorities learned about the leak only after receiving reports of a vapor cloud wafting across Interstate 20, Kershaw County Fire Chief Will Glover said.

The spill at the plant, right along the busy highway stretching from Aiken to Florence, forced the interstate‰??s evacuation and closure of a 10-mile stretch of I-20. Lanes reopened shortly after 10 p.m.

CAUSE OF 1148 FIRE THAT BURNED 450 ACRES IN PALO PINTO COUNTY TX
https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/article263892237.html

The recent wildfire in Palo Pinto County, dubbed the 1148 Fire by the Texas A&M Forest Service, was caused by an open trash container whose contents ignited, according to an open letter from Possum Kingdom West Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire destroyed five homes and burned 457 acres of land, according to the forest service.

According to the open letter, wind blew the lid off a trash container that held glass bottles, paper goods and food. Sunlight magnified by the glass bottles hit the other contents of the trash can and heated them until they reached ‰??ignition temperature.‰??

The fire then quickly built and vented out the side and top of the trash can, causing nearby cedar trees to ignite.

According to the Hamden Fire Department, exposures were protected at the scene. Two CTtransit workers were transported as a precaution from exposure to the smoke and one firefighter was transported for heat exhaustion.
Fire officials also added that fires like this one involving lithium-ion batteries are difficult to extinguish due to the thermal chemical process that produces great heat and continually reignites.

Neighbors in the area say they hear several booms before the flames.

In fact the booms were so intense, they shook the ground.

The fire started in one of the brewery's buildings and spread to a large silo filled with ethanol. No one was there when the flames broke out.

Over a dozen fire crews responded - some came from as far as the foothills to help.

An ABC30 crew at the scene saw flames so massive, they lit up the sky and could be seen from miles away.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - It‰??s one of the most unusual incidents authorities in Cape Girardeau County ever faced.

Late last month, an older man got a ride to a Cape County convenience store right off Interstate 55.

And, he had something inside one of his backpacks dangerous enough to cause a massive emergency response - one that shut the business down during one of the busiest weekends of the summer.

The whole ordeal shines a spotlight on something police departments and sheriff‰??s offices have done for years - helping travelers by crossing the line into neighboring counties to move them down the road.

‰??Our thing is to rush in and save the day.‰??

It‰??s a motto Fruitland Fire Chief Rob Francis has followed for more than three decades.

But, the strange incident that started back on June 24th stopped him in his tracks.

‰??I actually got a phone call from a former member of our district here that said I think we‰??ve got mercury at D Mart.‰??

‰??When units arrived, one of the twelve individuals attempted to discard a bag of powdered fentanyl from his pocket. As he pulled it from his pocket and threw it over his shoulder, the unsealed bag opened further, spreading the fentanyl all over himself and two of our officers,‰?? the ECPD page states.

Fentanyl is a highly dangerous drug, since a dose the size of a sand grain can be lethal, It poses hazards not only to users, but to first responders as well.

A report lists all the material released during a six-alarm fire last year at a northern Illinois chemical plant.

The Chemtool plant in Rockton is on the hook for the cleanup.

Monday‰??s report reveals that more than 15-million pounds of product burned in June 2021.

Rockton is just south of the Wisconsin state line and Beloit.

A majority of the material emitted was carbon dioxide, but water, smoke-particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and several other compounds were also released.

Chemtool‰??s parent company reported last year that air sampling showed no health risks to the surrounding community.
