Hezbollah-allied Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamie told Reuters he feared more parts of the Beirut port silos could collapse imminently after parts of them fell on Sunday afternoon, sending a large cloud of dust and smoke into the air.
The silos were severely damaged in a massive August 4, 2020 chemical explosion that left at least 215 dead and thousands injured. Officials warned in recent weeks that portions of the silos could soon collapse.

A family‰??s future is uncertain after their home in the Noble area was destroyed from a vehicle fire.

The home in the 5300 block of 120th Ave. SE ‰?? last valued at half a million dollars ‰?? went up in flames after Devon McElvany‰??s car caught fire in the garage. The fire ignited nearby chemicals from the McElvany‰??s taxidermy business, causing explosions that rapidly spread the fire and eventually destroyed the whole house.

What‰??s left is a tangle of ash, debris and frames where walls used to stand beneath a chimney that managed to stand during the fire. The ashes were still smoldering Friday afternoon, 10 days afterward.

Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Matthew Samuda, is heading the investigation into an alleged chemical spill in the Rio Cobre.

A delegation visited the site earlier today to assess the environmental and social impact of the recent fish kill.

‰??The issue facing us today is based on a recent spill but it is unfortunately not a new issue to the people who live along the Rio Cobre and the people who benefit from the Rio Cobre,‰?? Samuda said.

He added that this will be a multi-ministry investigation where a series of assessments will be done.

Describing the damage from the latest spill as "significant" Samuda said bauxite company Windalco could be made to forfeit a $115 million environmental performance bond if it is determined that it is responsible for the spill.

He said legislation will also be amended this year to significantly increase the fines on companies that cause such damage to the environment.

NORTH COUNTY ‰?? Pool-cleaning chemicals in the back of a pickup spilled when the truck was involved in a three-vehicle crash in the Bonsall area Sunday morning, prompting a hazmat cleanup, officials said.
The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on state Route 76 at the intersection of North River Road, said North County Fire Protection District Capt. John Choi.

A Chevrolet Astro van rear-ended a Ford F-150 truck that was carrying one gallon of muriatic acid and one gallon of hydrochloric acid, Choi said. The truck was sandwiched between the Astro and another vehicle in front, he said.

The chemicals that spilled are corrosive and can burn the skin and eyes. If inhaled, they can inflame the eyes, nose and throat.

‰??No one was in danger of dying, but it‰??s something we have to mitigate properly,‰?? Choi said.

(WFLA) ‰?? Edgewell Personal Care Company issued a recall Friday for three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp sunscreen sprays after an internal review of product samples found traces of benzene.

Benzene is a human carcinogen that can lead to leukemia, blood cancer in bone marrow, and other blood disorders. People typically are exposed to the chemical in their environment through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion.

The chemical is not an ingredient in the sunscreen spray, but the FDA said that ‰??unexpected levels of benzene‰?? came out of the spray bottles‰?? propellant.

As of this report, Edgewater said it has not learned of any illnesses related to the presence of benzene in their products nor does the FDA believe exposure to the benzene in the sprays could be particularly dangerous.

NORWELL - A malfunctioning lithium battery sparked a fire at a Tesla dealership in Norwell Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the dealership on Accord Park Drive for a fire inside the service bay at about 10:30 a.m. The fire was extinguished but it took firefighters a "considerable amount of time" to cool the car batteries by flooding the car with water, Norwell Fire Chief Dave Kean told WBZ-TV.

A few other cars in the service bay sustained damage from the water, he said. No injuries were reported.

The fire department remained on scene through the afternoon, as the battery was still malfunctioning. A Tesla technician from Pennsylvania is expected to arrive Friday evening to fix the battery.

Kean said the cause appears to be a technician error. He said whatever the technician was doing to the car appears to have caused the battery to malfunction and catch fire.
