NIOSH presents University Safety Award

NIOSH’s collaboration with the American Chemical Society (ACS),  
Division of Chemical Health and Safety resulted in funding the second  
annual national College and University Health and Safety Award among  
university chemical laboratories. This year’s $1,000 award was  
equally shared between two universities – the Massachusetts Institute  
of Technology (MIT) and the University of Nevada-Reno. The two  
recipients of the safety award were Louis DiBerardinis representing  
the MIT Environmental Health and Safety Office and Steven Oberg  
representing the UN-Reno Environmental Health and Safety Department.  
Mr. DiBerardinis presented a paper entitled “Building and  
Implementing an Environmental Health and Safety Management System in  
an Academic Environment,” and Dr. Oberg’s paper was entitled  
“Integration is a Key to University Lab Safety Program Success.
