The LA Times will be running a story probably today) reporting that UCLA received a CAL/OSHA citation for not reporting a chemistry/biochemistry department employee (TA/Grad Student) injury which required 7 days hospitalization.  In 2007 a Bunsen Burner ignited an ethanol spill which involved the student.  He received burns sufficient to require hospitalization.  It appears the fire was extinguished w/o fire department help and the student walked to campus health services.  The hospitalization invokes “immediate reporting” under Cal/OSHA rules and the Campus never reported.

Cal/OSHA learned of this during the Sangji investigation

This IS NOT covered in the press release cited below

The story cited below stemmed from a formal complaint about safety by the unionized employees of the campus

No word has yet been received from the LA DA on the possible criminal complaint resulting from the 2008 fatal incident

MORE ABOUT THIS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE TEACHING SAFETY SYMPOSIUM IN SAN FRANCISCO NEXT SUNDAY (21 March 2010)

Campus plans to fight Cal/OSHA citations

By Phil Hampton March 12, 2010

California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) officials have notified UCLA that the agency is issuing additional citations regarding lab safety and levying $67,720 in additional fines.

  ;

Campus officials said they are troubled that Cal/OSHA appears to be jettisoning the conclusions of the agency's previous report on the same subject and ignoring the far-reaching steps that UCLA has taken since a tragic lab accident in December 2008. A staff research associate died in January 2009 from injuries sustained in the chemical fire.

  ;

"We believe many of Cal/OSHA's citations relate to previous compliance issues and do not reflect current operations and procedures, especially as they pertain to training," said Kevin Reed, UCLA vice chancellor for legal affairs. "We intend to vigorously fight these citations."

Fire at Platte, no injuries

  ;

GREENVILLE Officials still don't know what caused Wednesday night's explosion at Platte Chemical Company that for a brief time sent flames shooting into the darkened sky. At one point, witnesses from two miles away reported seeing the fire.

  ;

"We'r e still investigating what happened," said Riverside Fire Chief Billy Schultz, who reported no injuries. "We'll be going back over there today and seeing what caused it. "

  ;

The Riverside Fire Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Department were called to the plant at 917 Platte Road just after 6 p.m. The Sheriff's Department, with the help of the Greenville Police Department, closed off Old Leland Road from Beauchamp Street to Seven Oaks Road. Also closed was Raceway Road from U.S. 82 to Old Leland Road.

  ;

Schultz said as a precaution, residents from a nearby trailer park and a few residental homes were evacuated.

Brother threw sodium in Charles

The sodium that exploded in 2007 and injured volunteers from a Charles River clean up crew was thrown into the river by Bhaskar Mookerji G, a Tau Epsilon Phi brother, according to public court documents.

  ;

Mookerji confessed that he threw the sodium into the Charles on or around Sept. 4, 2007. On Sept. 6, river clean-up volunteers were injured when they found the metal. Mookerji is a current Course VI graduate student and is a member of the Class of 2009.

Canada: Student in severe condition after science class blast

Teacher Shelley Barros was showing the afternoon chemistry class at St. Marcellinus Secondary School how different chemicals burn when a nearby Bunsen burner ignited the one-liner beaker of methanol in her hand, students said.

  ;

She dropped the flask onto the work table, scattering flames onto students in the front row.

  ;

Wednesday& #8217;s classroom fire sent five Mississauga teenagers to hospital, one who remains in critical condition, and sparked a government investigation into how a routine science experiment went so horribly wrong.
