Our EHS office has a copy of the tax exempt permit. There is a limit of the number of “proof” gallons that can be purchased for research in a year.

But we are not involved in purchasing. Pharmco has a copy of our permit, so anyone can order, and we will receive it, inventory it and deliver.

That is the extent of our recordkeeping.

We have some surplus that was abandoned by faculty who over ordered. That is the extent of our distribution.

I have heard of college kids trying to make ice cubes so their drinks would not get watered down (didn’t work, even in the -80).  Not sure if any understand it is pharmacopeia grade, but it makes the material subject to theft. Alcohol poisoning could be a real risk if consumer, so security is a concern.

Untaxed alcohol is big business - I think Pharmco is the only manufacturer/distributor, so you could say they have a monopoly. . You may find other distributors, but I think they are getting it from Pharmco.

Would you look at that, it’s 5:00

Hi All,

Are any of your EH&S departments involved in the distribution, purchasing, licensing, and record keeping of tax exempt ethanol?  Feel free to respond offline if you like.

Thanks in advance,

Kristi
