We use MSDSonline. It is set up with access through our University's Single Sign-On protocols allowing any faculty, staff, or student with a university login access to the database. We print the web address (simply mtu.edu/sds) on all door signage and it is listed on all University web pages. Doors signage also has a QR code access.

Based on discussions with the educational section of MIOSHA, we now require anyone working with hazardous chemicals to be able to access this database; labs are still allowed paper copies, but workers must know how to access the electronic database.

MSDSonline has a "fax back" service, although, with IP fax lines, it might not be as accessible as it once was during an internet outage. However, it would allow the option of faxing, say, directly to a hospital ER. They also provide a backup service that mirrors your database every 90 days. It is available to download onto a laptop or thumb drive, and if placed strategically in the right spaces (Public Safety, EHs, Chemical Stores) would provide access during a power/internet outage.

The availability of SDS's on their service is pretty broad and their search engine works quite well.

To me, the biggest downside (other than the name MSDS) is that it is a bit clumsy to use as a chemical inventory program.
