While the precision & accuracy of SDS parameters is important and must be an
ongoing concern, let's not lose sight of the impact of the original comment
in this thread.

The non-zero value for the AIT on the SDS is an alert that a dust ignition
hazard is present, regardless of the absolute value. While I have had only
limited experience with sulfur piles (one project many years ago), dust
explosion was not a hazard that come to mind as I thought about sulfur.

As you review SDSs, keep in mind that they (should) report the hazards of
the chemical or mixture. As you assess the risks, you can then evaluate
just how significant that hazard is in your specific situation.

I really appreciate this discussion of the vagaries of measuring specific
aspects of hazard scenarios. The points raised remind me that:
1) hazards occur as part of complex systems which are difficult to describe
using simple measurements and first principles
2) risks result from the situation as much as the hazardous properties of
the starting materials
3) the value of multiple open minds participating in the risk assessment
process is often overlooked in favor of the temptation to do a calculation
to answer a risk question.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their wisdom on this event!
