Just to be clear for those not versed in OSHA requirements, under 29 CFR 1910.1020, the Access to Employee Exposure and Medical Records standard, employers are required to maintain employee exposure records for 30 years. https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.1020  Safety Data Sheets are one way of fulfilling this requirement (and I would guess is the most common).

Of course, I doubt anyone has an SDS for "black stuff" that comes out of the vents in a sick building.

But the chemical inventory - yeah, supposed to have that AND the SDS's. Well, except that Appendix A of the lab-standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, which calls for an inventory, is "non-mandatory": https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.1450AppA
