WEST BURLINGTON ' Employees at the Borghi USA Inc. manufacturing plant in West Burlington were sent home Thursday after emergency crews responded to a report of a hydrochloric acid spill that was making some workers ill.

Just before 9 a.m., the West Burlington Fire Department was sent to the building after receiving an anonymous tip, according to Fire Chief Shaun Ryan.

A pipe at the factory broke late Tuesday, resulting in a large spill of hydrochloric acid, according to Ryan.

Shortly after West Burlington fire crews arrived on the scene, and due to the potential for hydrochloric acid to be explosive, Ryan said he ordered the plant to shut down and send employees home at about 9:15 a.m.

"I basically told the whole plant they had to evacuate," Ryan said. "(Hydrochloric acid) does have the potential to be explosive if the right conditions exist."

At some point, most science laboratories or buildings will require renovations or construction of new space. Renovations may be needed due to a change in the scientific activity, due to an event such as a minor flood or fire, or simply to modernize the space. Because chemistry laboratories are such specialized facilities, it is important that all stakeholders are involved in the project from planning through commissioning. All renovation projects should start with a mission and vision that can guide and anchor the work. A safety professional trained in chemistry and familiar with the needs of the department'ideally embedded in the department'can be an asset to the project team. This paper discusses some of the aspects encountered by an embedded chemical hygiene officer during the renovation of a chemistry stockroom and construction of a multiuse teaching laboratory. Lessons learned are provided to help others be successful with their projects.

Incident at Om Organic in Gujarat reportedly occurred during solvent distillation

An explosion and fire at a chemical factory in the Indian state of Gujarat killed six workers in the early hours of 11 April. Two other employees onsite at the time were unharmed.

Local media reports suggest that a reactor at Om Organic in Bharuch exploded during a solvent distillation process. The fire that followed spread rapidly. Local authorities are working to establish the cause of the blast.

The blast is the latest in a string of similar incidents in recent months, which some industry observers attribute to erosions of health and safety regulations across the country, but particularly in the heavily industrial state of Gujarat.

FORMALDEHYDE CAUSES LEUKEMIA AND OTHER CANCERS, DRAFT EPA REVIEW CONCLUDES

Formaldehyde is carcinogenic to humans, a draft risk assessment released April 14 by the US Environmental Protection Agency concludes. The review, conducted by the agency's Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program, cites evidence that inhalation of formaldehyde causes nasopharyngeal cancer, sinonasal cancer, and myeloid leukemia in humans.
Formaldehyde is used in making plywood, composite wood items, adhesives, and many other products. Consumers can be exposed to the chemical in tobacco smoke, construction materials, furniture, carpets, and other household products, the assessment says.
The EPA was poised to release the draft formaldehyde review in early 2018, but it abruptly put the assessment on hold under the Donald J. Trump administration. The agency is now planning to use the IRIS assessment to inform its upcoming formaldehyde risk evaluation under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
The American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical manufacturers, has been pressuring the EPA to halt the IRIS program'and its formaldehyde review'for many years. In an April 5 statement, the group claims that the process used by the program does not meet the agency's standards for 'transparency, scientific integrity, and a robust, independent peer review process.'

MENANDS - Authorities in Menands have lifted a shelter-in-place order requiring residents within a one-mile radius of Midland Farms to shelter in place on Wednesday afternoon as they investigated an ammonia leak.

The order was lifted at 4:15 p.m. after investigators determined there was no threat to the public, officials said.

"The leak was isolated to a valve," said Colonie Fire Department Deputy Fire Coordinator Michael Romano. "Technicians on-site determined it was not a hazard and we turned it over to them for repair."

Fire crews in Medford, Oregon, responded to a large chemical explosion and fuel fire Tuesday evening.

Loud explosions were heard throughout the area, leading to reports of possible chemical leaks, the New York Post reported. The main fire was located at the Pacific Pride Industrial Fuel Station, according to KOBI5. Those living or residing within a half-mile area of the explosion and fire were asked to evacuate, KDRV reported.

Crews were called around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night and were still working to control runoff from the fuel silos more than two hours later, advising people to avoid the area, the outlet reported. A heavy foam unit was called in from the local airport to help quell the disaster.

HAVERHILL, Ohio (WSAZ) - Demolition work sparked a fire Wednesday at the ALTIVIA Petrochemical Plant plant in Haverhill, Ohio.

The fire happened as a former Bisphenol A (BPA) production facility was being torn down around 10:35 a.m., according to Scioto County Emergency Management.

As the 200 foot tall steel structure was being toppled a fire ignited at the top of the structure as it hit the ground, officials report.

A statement released from Altivia says 'the cause of the fire is believed to be due to residual organic solid dust igniting as the structure was being brought down.'

Bisphenol A is a chemical compound primarily used in the manufacture of various plastics.

The Plant Emergency Response Team (ERT) on standby at the time, started to extinguish the fire with plant resources.

Altivia says no materials were released during the fire.

There were no injuries, no hazmat situation, and no danger to the public even though the smoke from the fire drifted over US 52 for a short time, Scioto County Emergency Management says.

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Fire Services Department supported other government agencies to remove dangerous chemicals stored at the old Taiwanese farm, east of Honiara this week.

The RSIPF Fire Services Department has supported the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology-Environment Division and Honiara City Waste Management to remove the chemicals to a safer location.

Director Dekyi said those chemicals are very dangerous and if not careful, they can burn human skin, cause damage to the respiratory systems and cause lung cancer. Some chemicals removed from the 20-foot container are phosphorus acid, copper sulphate and Borax Pentahydrate.

Superintendent Dekyi said:

'Since the Fire Service Department has the capability to deal with chemicals, we form part of the operation and safely remove the chemicals to a new safe location within the same vicinity. We store it separately just in case the chemical mix causes some damage.'

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is coordinating the whole operation.
