Subject: Ad for Environmental Health Specialist

Manage the safety and environmental programs and chemical
management/inventory programs for the Department of Chemistry &
Chemical Biology and Clark Hall (Applied & Engineering Physics,
Cornell Center for Materials Research, Laboratory of Atomic and Solid
State Physics, Center for Nanoscale Systems and Physics advanced
graduate teaching labs). Assist groups in developing procedures for
safety in the research labs. Conduct semi-annual inspection of all
research labs, support facilities and administrative offices and
provide follow-up on all deficiencies. Act as liaison to University
Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Compliance Office,
University Risk Management, and Cornell Police Department. Meet with
group safety representatives twice a year. Monitor safety and
environmental networks and communicate information to the group
safety representatives. Meet bi-monthly with Safety Oversight
Committees to advise on safety issues (eg. accident reports,
inspection results) and develop strategies for responding to larger
safety issues (eg. EPA or OSHA compliance). Continual self-education
on all issues which relate to the various chemical and safety
requirements.

Qualifications
Bachelors with 3-5 years experience or equivalent combination.
Laboratory experience in organic and/or inorganic chemistry is
required; demonstrated competencies in the areas of judgment,
problem-solving, verbal and written communication, interpersonal
skills and computer skills are necessary. Experience in laboratory
safety and hazardous waste disposal regulations and practices is
desirable.
