We do not allow them in the lab areas for professional and safety
reasons.  Once circumstance from the safety perspective is that a person
who is wearing headphones can not hear their fellow co-workers if they
are trying to alert them to a potentially hazardous situation in the
general facility.  

They are however allowed to wear them in the office and break areas.  So
you do have to make some allowances.

Some of our lab staff (pharma R&D) would like to wear iPods and similar
devices while working. We're not too keen on the idea, the main reason
being lack of focus on their work tasks (like cell phone use while
driving). How are the rest of you handling this issue?
