Sammye - I don't think I saw you mention how much sodium azide was being handled and for how long. It will certainly make a difference in glove selection. I'd have a hard time convincing anyone that the risk of sodium azide in the lab (an occasional measuring of very small quantity) would require the silver shield & over glove versus doubling a pair of nitrile & removing them immediately. If they're working in manufacturing and handling large quantities for 6-8 hour shifts - no doubt about the extra protection. This is the same problem with trying to use industrial standards in the lab. PSM is great but won't apply to the labs, but I can certainly use some of the concepts.

Not a flaw at all, Monona.  It is simply a statement of economic fact:  All gloves cannot be tested against all chemicals or all possible solvent/solute permutations unless one has an infinite amount of time, talent and treasure to do such testing.

If a user is all that curious, they can, of course, submit a glove sample and challenge agent to an ASTM testing facility and pay for the test themselves.

All of this points up a flaw in the ASTM standard test for gloves.  It only provides for testing of chemicals that are liquids at room temperature and pressure, not for solids or solids dissolved in a liquid.  The exception are common chemicals that are actually gases dissolved in water like hydrochloric acid or ammonia solutions.  I've never seen a substance on any glove chart that was a solid dissolved in water.  So I think you are on your own as far as I know.

Does anyone have a chart that lists the permeation times for sodium azide?
Thanks,
Sammye
