If this is the best answer, could someone please add it to the Wikipedia entry for trifluoroacetic acid? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trifluoroacetic_acid

Hi Kim,

The fluorines on trifluoroacetic acid are bound to carbon and are not labile.  They do not readily dissociate or ionize, thus TFA is not a source of fluoride.

I don’t believe HF emergency kits are necessary or appropriate for this particular substance.

Best,

Allen

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Question on trifluoracetic acid & emergencies

One of the labs on campus asked about having an HF emergency kit for trifluoracetic acid use.

I need the collective wisdom of his group - yes? no? references? (the SDS doesn't mention anything about this)

Thanks
