Demystify:
We have used UV cabinets for safety goggles in our labs for over 12
years. To the best of my knowledge, these cabinets do disinfect safety
glasses and goggles. They do not, however, remove any oils, grease,
chemicals or fingerprints from the goggles. I recommend that students
clean the goggles or safety glasses with a suitable glass/lens cleaner before
wearing them. We have used Sight Savers lens cleaner with Kimwipes to
clean the goggles, but a general glass cleaner such as Windex should be
effective. Be aware that this does not clean rubber or elastic straps on
the goggles.
You can read information about the cabinets on the Flinn Scientific web
site http://www.flinnsci.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=21321 and
view a video on goggle safety from that site. Representatives at Flinn
will speak to you and answer questions about these cabinets.

[DCHAS-L] ? Re Safety Glasses and UV Cabinets
Hello everyone,
One of my colleagues is interested in
knowing what other University Biology labs require in terms of eye protection
in their labs with low splash potential due to minute quantities handled and
how they go about it. Does anyone have any experience with providing safety
glasses and a UV cabinet for disinfection for a class room?
Thank you
for your wisdom, Monique Wilhelm Laboratory Supervisor/Adjunct
