I recall that September ACS Council meeting and
what a cliff hanger it was. The probationary
division had met all the requirements for full
status yet some did not want a safety division.
The probationary division had many people working
hard to meet the requirements and Glenn Seaborg
recognizing the value of safety and safe working
conditions stepped up.

To add a bit more to the answers so far, I think
of the Division as being more entrepreneurial and
emerging issue oriented, while the Committee is
more peer-reviewed and responds primarily to
well-established chemical hazards. In this way,
they form an important synergy in addressing
chemical safety issues.
