Re: Ask Congress to end the government shutdown & secure funding for scientific research & education

Dear ACS Members,

President Trump and Congress have failed to come to a consensus to complete FY2019 federal funding, yielding the longest shutdown in U.S. history. The closure impacts hundreds of thousands of federal employees throughout the country and disrupts important scientific research.

The effects of the shutdown on chemists across the country range from lost experiments and data, an inability to collaborate with government agencies, suspended funding, and lack of consideration for new grants.

Below you will find a summary of the key departments and agencies involved with scientific research and education currently impacted by the government shutdown:

National Science Foundation
Environmental Protection Agency
Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board
National Institute of Standards & Technology

We ask that you contact your elected officials to urge them to come together and end the government shutdown, appropriately funding the above agencies. The federal science enterprise is an important element of the chemical sciences and it is critical the government gets back to work.
