Hi Melinda,

During our summer research, we host a "Safety Day" that includes hands on demos. Use of the eye wash and safety shower is demonstrated at that time. Sometimes a student will want to see what the eye wash feels like. We do use containment as our eye washes and showers drain to floor. "Safety Day" happens about a month after initial safety training. This seems to be just enough passage of time where students need reinforcement.

Best,

Penny

I have demonstrated the use of safety showers during lab safety trainings using a containment curtain and in the process accidentally demonstrated how wet you can get in the process, but I've never asked a trainee to use the eyewash.

For the purpose you're suggesting, there is a good 2 minute video from the University of California Berkeley at

that demonstrates live use of an eyewash and would probably make the same point that a live demo would.
