Demystify:

How recent are the chambers. My experience is with medical, not research, units, used to treat decompression sickness. My understanding is that overboard dumping is required.
Single person units used on offshore rigs can operate up to 3 ATA without overboard dumping

Please go to this NFPA article. Some chambers operate at 3 atm to treat wounds or other illnesses.

People have ignited themselves because they wore synthetic clothing that created a static discharge. There was also a tragic case of a horse being treated for a leg injury and the chamber blowing they theorize was due to a spark from the horseshoe.

WHA International in New Mexico conducted a lot of the forensic testing for the U of Hawaii explosion. Dr. Barry Newton, President and many of his associates worked for NASA, White Sands on oxygen compatibility. When I was there he had a number of hyperbaric chambers that he was testing for these types of failures.

All the medical hyperbaric chambers I have seen do operate at 1 ATA, but 60 - 100% O2 is delivered to the PT via tight-fitting face mask and exhausted overboard. All the chambers have O2 sensors and procedures for increasing air flow through rates if the O2 concentration exceeds a set-point, usually 24%.
