When PNNL researchers began planning a project to synthesize a highly-toxic chemical agent, there was no room for error. Because of the risks involved, management had to match the significance of the work to a rigorous safety protocol. Before the work could begin, researchers and a diverse set of subject matter experts collaborated to perform an intentional collection of readiness activities.

This is where the Safe Conduct of Research principle "Cutting-Edge Science Requires Cutting-Edge Safety" came into play. Safety protocols and activities may not be something that's futuristic or that's never been done before. In this case, it was about taking a conservative approach, not just for compliance's sake, but going above and beyond standard work planning activities in the service of safety.

As you view this story, consider how you might incorporate cutting-edge safety practices into the work you do, no matter what your role in PNNL's mission may be.
