Position Summary:

Primary objectives:

1. Plans activities of the Environmental Affairs & Safety Department within a research and development environment that includes chemical, biological and equipment hazards, to ensure that environmental health and safety risks are kept to a minimum through effective compliance with ELC EHS policies, procedures and legislation.
2. Provide Health, Safety and Environmental training and instruction, assist with the promotion of environmental health & safety policies, procedures & operational practices, to provide advice and assist in environmental health & safety projects within their sphere of competency.
3. Provides leadership, expertise, support, direction, and assistance in facility health & safety matters.
4. Assists in compliance with applicable laws and conforming to the corporate Environmental and Safety Management System (ESMS) requirements. 
5. Helps to facilitate a culture of safety consciousness and continuous improvement

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

• Participates in strategic global initiatives focused on the laboratory safety program area to drive enhancements and consistency across ELC.  This may involve leading a Global Process Owner (GPO) group or a similar project beyond the NA region.
• Identifies needs in our EHS programs and develops and implement EHS programs as necessary, which ensure compliance, meet standards of the company Environmental Safety Management System, and demonstrate positive movement against EHS Key Performance Indicator’s (KPI). Works with EHS colleagues, as well as business partners to implement programs at multiple sites (Global EAS staff) or to target needs at their assigned site (site EAS staff).
• Supports the EAS Director in achieving the strategic goals and KPI’s of the department.
• Participates as a member on internal audits or represents the site EHS programs while being audited.  Assists with follow up and closure of actions items from audits. Provides updates to senior management on progress.
• Leads surveys of site operations and provides detailed recommendations for hazard elimination or control.
• Identifies gaps or needs in EHS programs or employee performance and develops and delivers training to address the gap/need. 
• Approves trainers and their training materials prior to them providing legal and other requirements training.
• Develops performance reports either individually for their site (as site EAS staff) or collectively as member of the Global EAS staff and presents the information as appropriate
• May have responsibility for the management of junior EAS staff or individuals in contract positions.
• Reviews information sources for new and/or changes to existing relevant laws, rules and regulations, and notifies management as appropriate. 
• Participates in and responds to regulatory inquiries and inspections of an environmental, health, safety nature or transportation of hazardous materials with minimal support and supervision.   May act as a liaison with local regulatory agencies.
• Provides technical expertise to site management and/or advises EAS colleagues in EHS areas to ensure compliance with regulations and the implementation of programs targeted towards the prevention of injuries and the reduction of our environmental footprint.
• Manages the EHS compliance requirements including record keeping, and the timely processing of all required permits and the review and certification of EHS regulatory reports. 
• Support and provide coaching to employee-led teams such as Safety Committees.
• Provides updates to senior management on overall performance and matters of importance with limited support.
• Maintains competency and stays current in the profession of Environmental, Health, Safety, and laboratory safety.

Qualifications:

• Ability to work with a geographically dispersed team in diverse work environments from laboratories, manufacturing, offices and retail. 
• May require training and participation in the site Spill Team and First Aid Team..
• Excellent presentation and communication skills. Ability to adjust communication style based on the situation and the audience.
• Knows and uses fundamental and some advanced concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization. Ability to understand and communicate technical environmental and safety requirements to both EAS staff and our business partners.
• Grade 11 staff may be part of an EAS team and lead a major program area or independently responsible for the EAS programs for a site with limited supervision.  Self-motivation, ingenuity and ability to drive best practice thinking is required.
• Presents to senior leadership on EAS program areas and related matters as required
• Ability to lead a team of peers from across ELC to enhance/align a particular program area. Fluent in MS Word, Excel, and Power Point applications. Experience working in Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
• 15-20% travel time
• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering or other Science/Technology with 5-7 years experience in the field of EHS in a research/laboratory setting.
• Certification: Prefer Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar designations, and/or a Master’s Degree in related area or be working towards such certification/degree.
