Demystify:

we train for certain types of ppe--ie gloves, safety glasses

If someone comes in wearing a cloth mask to lab, do we have to train them in use ?

Martin:

We're having that discussion right now, in fact!

Nothing has been finalized, but here is a summary of what we're considering:

  • The guidance will likely state that face shields will only be permitted as an alternative to face masks at the hood and not in other areas of the lab or building.
  • Specific parameters for acceptable face shield designs will be set (how far it extends beyond the chin and wraps around the face).  There will likely be examples of "acceptable" products and "non acceptable" products.
  • There will be a requirement to maintain 6'-physical distancing while wearing a face shield without a face mask, as the shield does not necessarily provide "source control" for droplets/aerosols produced by the wearer.  (At the hood, this fact is mitigated by the hood's ventilation.)
  • Guidance will be provided for disinfecting face shields.
