A face shield may provide some protection for the mucous membranes around you eye if someone coughs or sneezes directly in your face. This is a low likelihood event. It is not going to block the smaller aerosol particles that may be moving with the air and spreading throughout the room.
Beyond that, I see no value added by a face shield over what a reasonable face mask can provide. Remember, the mask is mostly to reduce spread of virus laden particles from a mask wearer who is infected but not showing symptoms. Those showing symptoms should be isolating themselves in the first place. For those who have an occasional uncontrollable cough or sneeze not likely related to COVID-19, we have been urged for several years now to cough and sneeze into our elbow or shoulder, but wearing a mask will serve the same function as an elbow for that.
