Demystify: 

Correct, the test done by TLARGI is for swell of rubbers by immersion for an extended time. This is obviously different than a glove permeation test in minutes.

 

The point I trying to make is that if the chemical you are interested in is not listed on a glove chart, then you could use the TLARGI chart as a starting point to understand which glove type could potentially be used and which won't have a shot. You'd still have to do the permeation test to determine the required glove thickness and understand maximum wear time.

 

Also, the TLARGI chart is commonly referenced in industry for rubber selection. Materials with a rating of 1 are considered suitable for long term service. So, researchers can also use it to select elastomers for experimental set-ups and replacement parts in old equipment.

Interesting, but it appears that it is resistance and not permeation they are testing for.  Some chemicals go through polymers without showing any signs of having done so.  They appear unchanged and would appear to have good resistance to chemical damage.  So the ASTM test for permeability in minutes is what I recommend for use.  Every manufacturer also has information on resistance and degradation, but you can almost detect that yourself with observation.

I addition to everyone's fantastic advice, I'd like to point out that the ACS Rubber Division's Los Angeles Rubber Group developed a chemical resistance chart for rubber materials. This chart can be useful when the subject chemical is not listed in the manufacturer's glove chart. At a bare minimum, it will give you an indication of potential issues with various glove types.

The reason why I didn't include Kimberly-Clark and certain other manufacturers was based upon my chemistry experience from high school through research at 3M.

 

Although it dates me, during that period, from 1961 until 1976, the use of "disposable/single use" examination gloves was not only unthinkable but also forbidden.  I was acquainted only with and used the Ansell Solvex (nitrile), neoprene and natural latex rubber gloves with caliper thickness 15mil - 22mil for any and all work on the open lab bench, in a hood/cabinet or glove box.

 

I may be "old fashioned" but also I have at home a supply of those type of gloves for housework.  I do have a box of 4mil nitrile examination gloves but use them only for medical and personal hygiene reasons.
