Subject: [DCHAS-L] Origin of the RACE/PASS acronyms for fire response?

Date: Jan 27, 2022 16:38 UTC

Reply-To: ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety

Demystify:

I had an inquiry from someone who was interesting in promoting his own alternative to the familiar RACE/PASS mnemonic that some places use for fire emergency response:

RACE - Rescue, Alarm, Confine, Extinguish.

PASS - Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze handle, Sweep side to side.

Does anyone know the origin of the RACE/PASS system? Who came up with it or first promoted it?

Thanks,

Rob Toreki
