Research and teaching have an array of unique hazards that reflects both the variety and continuous evaluation of their operation. These include technical, physical, chemical, or biological hazards. We are reporting a laboratory accident involving acryloyl chloride (chemical hazard), its consequences, safety precautions, and the lesson learned from this incident.
Acryloyl chloride is a highly toxic and volatile liquid. After being accidentally exposed to acryloyl chloride, a victim experienced blackout, headache, dizziness, tiredness, nose bleeding, persistent burning of the eyes, and intense nausea and vomiting. A victim reported two distinct hazardous effects, namely, nose bleeding and stomach ulcers, which were not mentioned in the SDS of acryloyl chloride. To avoid further exacerbation of consequences of acryloyl chloride accident, it may be preferable to initiate steroidal therapy along with symptomatic treatment from the start. The accidental consequences and lessons learned from this tragedy will serve as guiding factors for research scholars, postdoctoral fellows, principal investigators (PI), safety professionals, institutions, occupational health nurses, physicians, and toxicologists to prevent anything similar from happening again in the future.

HERBICIDE APPLICATION MAY BE A SOURCE OF ATMOSPHERIC AMINE POLLUTION

Researchers have found evidence that common herbicide salts may be an overlooked source of amine pollution to the atmosphere, where they can oxidize to form potential carcinogens or contribute to the formation of particulate matter.
Farmers frequently apply herbicides as amine-containing salts in order to reduce the herbicides’ volatility and prevent them from drifting to nearby fields. But in a Monday talk in the Division of Environmental Chemistry at the ACS Fall 2022 meeting, Washington University in St. Louis PhD student Stephen Sharkey reported that these amines can readily volatilize. In one experiment, Sharkey found that nearly 90% of the amine was lost to the air.
To the best of the researchers’ knowledge, this work is the first to look into the environmental fate of the amines in these herbicide salts. Although previous work has looked into how the herbicide itself moves throughout the environment, “we have a tendency to overlook the chemicals that are applied alongside the active agents,” explained Kimberly Parker, an environmental chemist at the same university and the senior researcher on the amine project. In a call with C&EN, Parker said she was surprised that others have overlooked this potential amine source.

SUFFOLK, Va. - Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to a tanker truck crash that caused a major oil spill Monday afternoon.
Crews responded to the crash Monday afternoon in the 1200 block of Buckhorn Drive. First arriving crews found a tanker truck on its side leaking used cooking oil onto the surrounding area.
A hazmat cleanup company was called by the trucking company to contain and clean up the approximately 1,600-gallon spill.
Officials say there were no injuries reported.

COMSTOCK PARK, MI — A large industrial fire which drew crews from around Kent County and forced a partial highway closure has left an environmental cleanup in its wake.
Waste oil and chemical-laden firefighting water from the blaze at Future Environmental will need to be excavated alongside U.S. 131 near Grand Rapids, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Employees at a state lab in Lincoln spent time out of the office Monday after an explosive solution leaked from a beaker.
Lincoln Fire & Rescue was called to the Public Health & Environmental Lab just north of 14th Street and Nebraska Highway 2 on a report of a hazardous material spill.
LFR spokeswoman Nancy Crist said a possibly explosive solution spilled out of a beaker, causing employees to be evacuated from the building.
Crews were sent inside the lab to “eliminate” possible ignition sources, Crist said

A Santa Rosa man is accused of endangering his young sisters by manufacturing butane hash oil, which caused their home to explode Sunday night, police said.
Cameron Lenzini, 22, was arrested in the 1000 block of Russell Avenue, where he lives with family including two children ages 7 and 12, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.
He’s suspected of child endangerment, manufacturing drugs and causing a fire at an occupied building.
According to police, the explosion occurred as Lenzini was making butane hash oil in his garage.
Hash oil, also known as honey oil, has a high concentration of THC, which makes it much more potent than regular marijuana.

The Northern Territory government has issued an emergency "Code Brown" for its health services, after a massive fire caused an estimated $30 million in damage to a warehouse storing medical supplies for Royal Darwin Hospital and other health centres.
A Code Brown was declared as a result
The warehouse supplied the Royal Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Gove Hospitals
Emergency services were called to the large fire on College Road in the Darwin suburb of Berrimah at about 10:30am on Sunday, according to NT Chief Fire Officer Mark Spain.
"On arrival, the building was already engulfed in fire," he said.
"Fire crews did manage to get inside to contain that fire, but it got away from them at that point in time."
Mr Spain described the building as a "health storage facility" and that the "initial estimate" of the damage was $30 million.

"At this stage, it's early, but you can image [there were] a lot of medical supplies in there, we know that there were oxygen cylinders in there.
"They exploded later on into the fire so we kept a safe distance.
