Demystify:
In the 1990s, during the peak of meth lab ops in California, there were cleanup protocols established based on surface wipe samples. I ultimately concluded that even in a dwelling where only smoking occurred, you could not achieve "clean" w/o demolishing down to studs.  My company stopped doing remediation consulting as the liability was too high.

Here is a link to the 2005 California law/regulations on metho cleanup:

Bruce,

You've  proposed the quintessential "on-time, under-budget, quality product; pick two" scenario.  The project can be performed with a Summa canister which is then sent to a reputable environmental or industrial hygiene testing facility. The canisters are relatively easy to use and a technician-level procedure can be written.  The laboratory analysis is done via UESPA (e.g. Method TO-14) or ASTM methods with laboratory quality control in place (hence the "reputable" laboratory part). The method involves GC/MS or GC/MS/ECD instrumentation and isn't cheap. My "go-to" labs, Analytics and Pace, have "call for pricing" in their directory of services, which usually equates to "pricey."

You can get a very good outline of the "how" from the USEPA Methods site.  I'll attach the method in a separate e-mail as the Listserv does not allow attachments.

Good luck,

Harry

Fellow Listers,

I’m looking for feedback.  One of the groups I belong to is for next door neighbors and someone identified a problem relating to health effects from chronic exposure to meth fumes from another of the tenants in their condo.  She has called police and fire department, but either the door was not answered or the fire department could not detect acute exposure level concentrations.

I would like to write an IH protocol using validated sampling methods and analysis, that could be performed at reasonable costs with minimum protocol technical knowledge of IH, or alternatively one that I could provide pro-bono meeting those requirements to identify chronic exposures.

It has been years since I was on an LEPC and aware of the hazards that could be encountered and need some assistance identifying chemicals of concern to develop the protocol.

I know this is outside of our normal scope of operations, but this is an area where we could provide our expertise to help identify and quantify a problem that needs addressed.

I’m interested in all thoughts, opinions, suggestions and possible concerns.

Thank you,

Bruce V

P.S.  Ralph – If you think this is off topic, or not in our “normal” scope, please do not post.  Thank you!
