KUALA LUMPUR: Two fast food outlet workers and a Health Ministry (KKM) officer were rushed to the hospital when they fainted due to a gas leak at the restaurant in Jalan Pandan here, today.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said in a statement that firefighters from the Pandan Fire and Rescue Station and Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) teams from the Shah Alam and Tun Razak Fire Stations were deployed to the scene following a distress call at 9.55 am.
He said the KKM officer entered the restaurant to help the two female restaurant workers who had fainted.
The victims were brought to the Ampang Hospital for further treatment, he said, adding that the restaurant is closed pending an investigation.
Meanwhile, Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the fainting spell was caused by the air ventilation fan not being activated while the restaurant workers were frying chicken, resulting in smoke and fumes from a gas leak not being expelled through the exhaust fan of the kitchen.
“The content of carbon monoxide that exceeded the content of oxygen caused the three victims to inhale smoke and gas until they passed out,“ he said in a statement today.
He said all the victims who received treatment at the Ampang Hospital were in stable condition and the case was classified as ‘Refer to Other Agencies’, namely to the Hazardous Materials Special Team (Hazmat). - Bernama

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS12) — This is something most of us didn't have to think about until recently.
In Fort Myers, storm surge caused by Hurricane Ian caused lithium-ion batteries to become compromised, and that damage caused the batteries to ignite.
Luckily, members of the Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue Hazmat Strike team were on hand.

They responded to Friday morning's fire and say the cause was actually interior atmospheric monitoring which found elevated carbon monoxide levels, and hydrogen cyanide levels, along with multiple batteries with high heat signatures.
The batteries were removed from the structure and discarded properly, at a hazardous materials waste site.

The children were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation, according to the YMCA’s President and CEO, Stacie Peugh.

VIC LAWS UPDATED AFTER TOXIC WASTE FIRES

Victoria's dangerous goods laws will be upgraded after a review found two large chemical fires in Melbourne could have been avoided.
The fires broke out at two factories in West Footscray and Campbellfield in 2018 and 2019 after chemical waste was illegally stockpiled.
The fires burnt for days, releasing plumes of toxic smoke into the community and damaging the local environment, with the clean-up costing more than $100 million.
In response, the Victorian government in 2020 asked Andrew Palmer KC to lead an independent review of the state's dangerous goods laws.
Mr Palmer found the current regulations were outdated, difficult to navigate and inconsistent, which contributed to non-compliance and illegal activity.
