For the second time in three weeks, the Palo Alto Fire Department on Thursday afternoon responded to a hazardous materials spill at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, Battalion Chief Shane Yarbrough said.
Multiple units, including three engines, went to the VA Hospital at 3801 Miranda Ave., Palo Alto at about 2:53 p.m. VA staff were testing generators in an outbuilding when a fuel line broke, spilling diesel fuel, Yarbrough said. About 95% of the fuel remained within the containment container and a small amount leaked outside the structure onto soil.
A city of Palo Alto online notification stated that 20 to 40 gallons spilled inside the generator cabinet. Palo Alto Fire Department is investigating the incident, which closed out after about an hour.
Yarbrough said the fire department tested the soil, and the contaminated area was cleaned up.

A “chemical irritant” near a first-floor bathroom at Brookline High School lead to an evacuation of the building, according to a notice sent by school officials on Thursday.
Two students and two staff members were sent to the hospital for “evaluation and treatment,” school officials said. The evacuation took place around 11:47 a.m. at the 115 Greenough St. building, and by 2 p.m., a hazmat team had cleared the building, the Brookline Police Department said.

PAULINA, La. — Authorities in southeast Louisiana’s St. James Parish allowed all but two families to return to their homes Thursday, a day after a train car derailment and hydrochloric acid leak forced the evacuation of 200 residences.
Parish President Pete Dufresne said cleanup — including excavation of soil — was required at two homes closest to the spill site.
Authorities had begun a street-by-street lifting of the evacuation hours earlier, beginning with houses farthest from the site, as workers inspected for contamination from the chemical leak. Hotel stays had been authorized for a second night for evacuated residents.
St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin said any affected homes would have to be washed with agents to neutralize the acid residue. Thursday afternoon, Martin told reporters that monitors were available to check inside homes for anyone who felt an inspection would be necessary. He said one property owner asked for a test of his well water.

PAULINA, La. (WGNO) — St. James Parish authorities assessed the damage after a freight train jumped the tracks, causing a derailment and chemical spill Wednesday (Nov.2).
The incident happened just before 2 p.m., according to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say six carts were derailed with one of them carrying 20 thousand gallons of hydrochloric acid.
Train derailment, acid leak prompt evacuations in Louisiana
Hydrochloric acid is found in cleaning supplies and can cause respiratory irritation. The spill prompted an evacuation order for residents in the City of Paulina.
Officials say depending on the direction of the wind, about an additional 150 people may have to be evacuated. WGNO crews are on the scene.

A chemical spill in Tillsonburg, Ont. on Wednesday resulted in road closures and the evacuation of some homes.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the spill originated at a business on London Street. Officers were called to the scene around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Officials confirmed to CTV News the business involved is Hi Def Auto Detailing.
"Crews were called to a spill involving undercoating and truck bed liner," an email from Jadie Scaman with Tillsonburg Fire said. "There are no injuries. We worked with OPP EMS to isolate the area as a safety precaution and are working with the owner and a clean up company to contain and remove the product safely."
Police shut down several roads in the area of Broadway and London streets for several hours. The roads were reopened around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
