CHICAGO (CBS) – A carbon monoxide leak at an Englewood church sent a dozen people to the hospital Sunday.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to a level one hazmat situation around noon at the New Philadelphia Baptist Church, located at 5452 S. State St.
People were gathered for the afternoon service when they noticed an unusual smell.
Fire officials said 12 people were taken to local area hospitals in good condition.
The pastor is just thankful firefighters got there in time.
"A lot of people's eyes were watering and some were getting dizzy, so we had to call the fire department," said Rev. Dennis Dow. "We couldn't tell what it was."

An Atlanta house fire killed two people over the weekend and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, the agency announced Sunday.
The fire involved natural gas, according to a tweet from the NTSB, which investigates pipeline mishaps.
A fire department statement said crews responded to a northwest Atlanta home around 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department officials said a gas leak was found in the front yard after crews extinguished the heavy blaze.
Other news reports said Atlanta Gas Light, the largest natural gas distributor in the Southeast, attributed the cause of the fire to the leak. Fire officials said the origins were still under investigation.

SEEKONK -- About 110 gallons of a chemical solvent leaked from storage drums in a trailer parked at a Pine Street trucking company but caused no environmental damage, fire officials said Friday.
The leak occurred at R + L Carriers at 275 Pine St. and was reported to the fire department about noon Friday.
Two 55-gallon drums containing methylpyrrolidone, which officials say is not hazardous, were punctured Thursday night by a worker using a forklift, fire Capt. Adam Dalessio said.
The incident was reported to corporate officials and the state Department of Environmental Protection, which contacted local fire officials.

A chemical firm has been fined £800,000 after an explosion left a worker fighting for his life.
The 49-year-old man was scarred, partially blinded and also suffered hearing damage in the blast at Gateshead's International Paint plant.
He had been making paint in a large mixing vessel, which involved the use of flammable liquids.
The firm admitted breaching health and safety laws and was fined at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.
The explosion happened as the employee was emptying resin pellets from a large bulk bag into the vessel which generated an electrostatic spark and ignited flammable vapour.
The man, from South Shields, spent eight days on life support.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the company failed to put sufficient measures in place to control the risk, including a correctly working extraction system.

PANGNIRTUNG DUMP FIRE EXPECTED TO BURN THROUGH THE NIGHT, MAYOR SAYS

A fire at Pangnirtung’s wood and metal dump that began on the early hours of Friday morning burned throughout the day and is expected to continue throughout the night, Mayor Eric Lawlor told Nunatsiaq News.
“It’s still doing pretty badly,” he said.
As a result of the fumes that have come from the dump fire, the hamlet told residents on Friday to stay indoors because of the toxins that have been released into the air.
The top concern Friday afternoon was to prevent the fire from spreading to the chemical dump, as that would emit stronger toxic fumes into the community, Lawlor said.
“We’re doing our best to move a lot of that stuff away so that it doesn’t catch on fire and release the fumes and toxicity from those substances,” he added.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is currently measuring the air quality.
