MARTINEZ -- A planned, routine flare-up at a Martinez oil refinery late Friday afternoon, which became a cause for concern for some nearby residents, has concluded, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

A Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesperson said firefighters responded to reports of a fire or explosion at the Martinez Refinery Company late Friday afternoon, but later canceled its emergency response to the 3400 block of Pacheco Boulevard, where the refinery is located, because the large flames that were seen in the area were a result of the flare-up.

Refinery officials confirm the flare-up -- conducted to burn off deposits -- was part of an ongoing special operation. The operation, including the fire, was confined to refinery property.

Fordham University is banning e-bikes and scooters from its campuses, over fears that the dangerous lithium-ion batteries that propel the devices will explode, the Daily News has learned.

Beginning on Jan. 3, all battery-powered e-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards won’t be allowed on any of the Bronx college’s properties “including all buildings on and off campus,” Fordham Public Safety Associate Vice President Robert Fitzer wrote in an alert sent to the student body Friday.

“The storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries in residence halls and other university buildings represent a serious hazard as they may explode causing injuries and starting fires,” Fitzer wrote in his memo.

E-bikes and scooters will also be banned “on sidewalks and walkways within the campus,” Fitzer said.

“This has become necessary due to the recent surge in deadly fires in New York City from batteries,” he noted. “(These) fires are chemical reactions that, once underway, cannot be extinguished like traditional fires and create toxic gases that can be deadly in enclosed spaces. Fire extinguishers do not work on lithium-ion batteries.”

CHELMSFORD — Firefighters responded to an explosion inside a lab at Teleflex, an emergency medical equipment provider, located at 16 Elizabeth Drive, on Thursday night.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident, which is under investigation, Chelmsford Fire Chief Gary Ryan said in an email to The Sun.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Teleflex building for reports of an explosion shortly before 10:10 p.m. Thursday. Ryan said crews arrived on scene to find “a smoke condition” and water emanating from a first-floor lab room.

“Upon entry into the lab room, the room was charred, and the fire was controlled by the activated sprinkler system,” Ryan said.

He added a technician at the scene was fortunately uninjured during the incident.

Fire investigators discovered flammable liquids used in the medical manufacturing process, which Ryan said might have been involved in the spread of the flames.

According to their website, Teleflex, which has 14,000 employees worldwide, is “a global provider of medical technologies designed to improve the health and quality of people’s lives.”

“Due to the critical nature of providing emergency medical equipment and supplies, it is imperative that we understand why this incident happened and work to prevent future occurrences,” Ryan said.

Ryan said the lab will require extensive repairs and will remain closed during the investigation.

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) said emergency crews are cleaning up a chemical leak at a business in east Tulsa.

TFD was called to BS&B Safety Systems near East 41st Street and South Sheridan Road around 7:15 a.m. They said sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid were poured into barrels that weren’t rated to handle the chemicals. The chemicals leaked out of the bottom and started spilling.

Two people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The leak is not threatening surrounding areas or businesses.
