Go get 'em, Ralph. That open idea is the worst. Some architects listen to clients in my field and they want me to help them design big open areas where people practicing all kinds of art can work together and share. Geez. But ceramic dusts require exceedingly low ventilation rates and no turbulence, oil painting with solvents requires rapid dilution, and on and on. And just try to select the safety equipment for exposure to everything!
Studios and labs need separate enclosed spaces especially designed and equipped for the hazards of that activity. Monona

A follow up thought on the lab security question:
The large majority of changes that are needed to support more secure laboratories are systemic rather than at the lab level.
As walls between labs started disappearing from laboratories as the open lab and increasing use of shared spaces concept was implemented in the 2000-2005 time frame, many lab people pointed out that the quality of their lab work was now at the mercy of their neighbors who now had uncontrolled access to move between labs. Lab security in 1960’s lab buildings, which included walled spaces for ventilation and fire control reasons, was significantly easier than lab buildings built after 2000.
