I will pass these thoughts and suggestions along to our person in touch with the gentleman who posed the question.>> why is a “special moving company” needed?A "special moving company" might not be needed and the question was for "any moving/rigging company ... able to move a [class 2] biosafety cabinet".It can be helpful to find a service provider familiar with the task involved. We often want to know that a contractor, consultant, etc. has done this or similar (enough) work which gives us greater confidence that things will go fine and not go awry.Based on experiences I could imagine a lab manager thinking or saying, "Make sure we get a contractor who does this. We don't want a repeat of that last one who kept asking over and over how we knew that there weren't any stray pathogens on the surfaces - that was a pain!"I hope this helps. Again, my appreciation for the responses, suggestions, and questions - they are all welcome and helpful. All my best,JonJonathan Klane, M.S.Ed., CIH, CSP, CHMM, CITSenior Safety Editor, Lab Manager MagazinePhD candidate, Human + Social Dimensions of Science + TechnologyCollege of Global FuturesSchool for the Future of Innovation in SocietyOn Thu, Dec 22, 2022 at 6:13 PM Lucy Dillman <lucydillman**At_Symbol_Here**comcast.net> wrote:You might contact the manufacturer of the cabinet. Since this cabinet must, by regulation, be free of pathogens and hazardous materials, and since moving parts, if any, must be secured, why is a “special moving company” needed? If the device weighs more than a large refrigerator, it should be easily handled by any rigger. If less, then any moving company can handle. If your concern is the lab from which it is removed or into which it is located, all hazards can be easily mitigated.
Please clarify the need for the specialized service.
Thx

TSS might be able to help.
They have offices in SoCal. I'm just unsure if they'll move it for you. They may have advice for someone who can.

Hello DCHAS folks!
We got a request for info on any moving/rigging companies in southern California that are able to move a class 2 biosafety cabinet (BSC). We don't have any other details (e.g., where in SoCal, how far of a move, model/size of BSC, etc.).
Do any of you have any recommendations of companies you've perhaps worked with?
Thanks!Jon
