ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Six entities impacted by the 2015 Gold King Mine spill will share roughly $4 million in grants from a settlement, according to the New Mexico Attorney General’s office.
Outgoing Attorney General Hector Balderas announced earlier this month that nearly $4.3 million will be divided among multiple municipalities and agencies.
The cities of Aztec and Farmington in San Juan County, the San Juan Soil and Water Conservation District, the state tourism department and the New Mexico State University Extension Service will all receive six-figure grants.
To be recipients of the grant program, they submitted a proposal to the New Mexico Attorney General's office.
"Out of tragedy comes hope, and I am honored to award these amazing applicants and their ideas to invest in their own communities,” Balderas said in a statement.
The grant funds come from the overall $32 million settlement reached in June between New Mexico and the U.S. government over the spill that polluted rivers in three western states. The spill released 3 million gallons (11 million liters) of wastewater from the inactive Gold King Mine in southwestern Colorado, sending a bright-yellow plume of arsenic, lead and other heavy metals south to New Mexico, through the Navajo Nation and into Utah through the San Juan and Animas rivers.

Your hormones help control different functions in your body and impact everything from your metabolism to how you feel. And if your hormones don't function the way they should, it can affect your health.
Hormone health is a big trend in wellness, according to theTikTok star Hannah Bronfman, who says you'll be hearing a lot more about it in the future. Specifically, she says, addressing endocrine disruptors is the "next big thing." Bronfman says that there are a lot of products about to hit the market that will be labeled "endocrine safe," meaning they're free of endocrine disruptors, which "can be found in just about all the products that we use," including food, toys and beauty products.
Bronfman is far from the first person to use the term "endocrine disruptors," and you've probably come across it at some point before. But you may not necessarily know what that means. So what are endocrine disruptors exactly, and how worried about them should you be? Here's the deal.

An ammonia wagon overturned near the Serbian town of Pirot, 51 people were hospitalized, and a state of emergency was declared in the town. It has a sizable Bulgarian minority.
Pirot Mayor Vladan Vasic declared a state of emergency in the town last night after a wagon of a freight train carrying ammonia overturned near Sopotski Khan. During the accident, gas leaked from the carriage and a high concentration of ammonia was released into the atmosphere, as a result of which 51 people were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning. Due to the state of emergency, schools in Pirot will not be open today.
The wagon of the freight train carrying ammonia overturned around 5:30 p.m. on a section of the railway from Pirot to the village of Stanichene, near Sopotski Khan, the Serbian Interior Ministry said.
RTS reported that the accident occurred when a group of 20 tankers derailed, "at least one of which fell into the riverbed of the Nishava river, which caused a violent reaction of ammonia upon contact with the water." The Emergency Department of the Serbian Interior Ministry confirmed that 51 people with symptoms of ammonia poisoning have been hospitalized so far, two of them with severe symptoms. Seven people were transferred to the University Clinical Center in Nis. They have stable vital signs and mild chemical burns. The Ministry of the Interior urged the citizens who live near the accident not to leave their homes and not to go outdoors.
27 firefighters with 10 fire trucks were sent to the scene. Due to the incident, the railway traffic on this line was stopped. Due to poor visibility, the traffic between Pirot and Bela Palanka on the main road has been interrupted. The alternative route is through the village of Ponor. Second-shift workers at “Tiger Tires” have also been evacuated, and third-shift workers will not come to work.
The company "Serbia Cargo" reported that this is a freight train that runs daily on the Nis-Dimitrovgrad section and transports raw materials from Bulgaria to Prahovo and Shabac. AFP reported that chemical waste from Bulgaria was also transported in the wagons of the derailed train.

On Dec. 30, 2021, one of the most destructive wildfires on record in Colorado swept through neighborhoods just a few miles from our offices at the University of Colorado Boulder. The flames destroyed over 1,000 buildings, yet when we drove through the affected neighborhoods, some houses were still completely intact right next to homes where nothing was left to burn.
Although the people who lived in these still-standing homes were spared the loss of everything they owned, when they returned after the fire, they found another disaster.
Noxious smells and ash on their windowsills and doorways initially made their homes unlivable – and potentially hazardous to human health. Some of these residents were still reporting health problems from being in their homes months later, even after the homes had been cleaned.

FORMER REFINERY STOPS MEASURING CANCER-CAUSING CHEMICAL

Tags: us_PA, industrial, discovery, environmental, benzene, petroleum
The company redeveloping the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery site in South Philadelphia plans to stop monitoring for benzene at the end of this year.
The cancer-causing chemical has been found at high levels at the property line even after the refinery shut down. Neighbors, advocates, and experts have called for the monitoring to continue.
“One way of showing good faith and that you care about the community is to keep monitoring to see if we’re safe,” said Shawmar Pitts, a managing director of the activist group Philly Thrive who has lived near the refinery all his life.
Benzene is found in things like car exhaust, tobacco smoke, and crude oil, which was processed at the PES refinery before it shut down following an explosion and fire in 2019.

The massive site is contaminated from more than a century of industrial use, and remediation has been going on for years. The refinery itself is now at least 88% demolished.

According to Chief Chad P. Sonnier, Scott Fire Department was dispatched to the Ile Des Cannes apartment complex around 8 p.m. Sunday because of a chemical smell in the area.
During the investigation, firefighters determined that the bedroom of a downstairs apartment was being utilized as a storage area for an occupant’s lawn service. Several gas cans were also discovered in the room. The vapors from the downstairs apartment spread throughout the fourplex.
Chief Sonnier says Lafayette Fire Department Hazmat Unit was then requested to the scene to determine the severity of the incident. Hazmat personnel determined that the entire fourplex was in danger and needed to be evacuated until the scene was rendered safe.
Hazmat personnel then utilized specialized equipment to remove and/or neutralize the flammable vapors that spread throughout the building.
The fourplex was rendered safe after nearly two hours. Occupants were permitted to reenter their apartment.

Levels of toxic “forever chemicals” in treated industrial wastewater at Misawa Air Base had significantly fallen six months after an inadvertent leak of residual firefighting foam at an aircraft shelter, according to a Japanese defense official and a base spokesman.
A manmade chemical, PFAS, and its components PFOS and PFOA, are found in firefighting foam, also known as aqueous film forming foam, or AFFF, on some U.S. military bases in Japan. Japanese authorities in recent years have tracked similar spills at U.S. bases on Okinawa and in the Tokyo metro area.
A frozen pipe in a hardened aircraft shelter at Misawa in northeastern Japan cracked Jan. 3 and released water through a fire suppression system where the foam was previously kept, base spokesman Lt. Col. Cody Chiles told Stars and Stripes by phone Thursday. Misawa is home to the 35th Fighter Wing.
