IOWA CITY, Iowa — The City of Iowa City conducted a water sample test of the Iowa River following the C6-Zero plant explosion in Marengo that happened on Dec. 8.

The Water Division of Iowa City took water samples to the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL), which found no reportable detection of contamination, according to a press release sent out by the City of Iowa City on Thursday.

SHL tested for chemical compounds associated with petroleum, such as gasoline and diesel fuel.

The Water Division will test water from the river weekly for the next three weeks to ensure it's safe.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal agency released its final report Thursday on the April 26, 2018, explosion and fire that caused about $500 million in damage to the Husky Superior Refinery and injured 36 workers.

"The explosion released 39,000 pounds of flammable hydrocarbon vapor into the air," a summary of the report from the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board noted. "Over 2,500 residents of the city of Superior were evacuated from their homes, and the city of Duluth, Minnesota, issued a shelter-in-place order."

The refinery was owned at the time of the explosion by Husky Energy, which had bought it six months prior from Calumet Specialty Products. Husky then merged with Cenovus Energy.

In its report , the Chemical Safety Board details how the explosion occurred while the refinery was shutting down its fluid catalytic cracking unit to perform planned maintenance: a common refining process called a "turnaround." Two vessels on the catalytic cracking unit exploded and propelled metal fragments up to 1,200 feet away that punctured a nearby asphalt storage tank and spilled about 17,000 barrels of hot asphalt, which ignited and caused fires.

FLINT, MI -- Genesee County’s medical health officer has lifted a no-contact order for a section of the Flint River that was hardest hit by a June chemical spill.

Dr. Pamela Hackert announced her action in a recension order on Wednesday, Dec. 28, saying the spill by Lockhart Chemical continues to be monitored and that remediation efforts are also continuing in the area of the river from Stepping Stone Falls to Leith Street.

Deputy Health Officer Kayleigh Blaney said the decision to rescind the no-contact order at this time came after officials found no seepage from the area after heavy rains.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Six entities impacted by the 2015 Gold King Mine spill will share roughly $4 million in grants from a settlement, according to the New Mexico Attorney General’s office.

Outgoing Attorney General Hector Balderas announced earlier this month that nearly $4.3 million will be divided among multiple municipalities and agencies.

The cities of Aztec and Farmington in San Juan County, the San Juan Soil and Water Conservation District, the state tourism department and the New Mexico State University Extension Service will all receive six-figure grants.

To be recipients of the grant program, they submitted a proposal to the New Mexico Attorney General's office.

"Out of tragedy comes hope, and I am honored to award these amazing applicants and their ideas to invest in their own communities,” Balderas said in a statement.

The grant funds come from the overall $32 million settlement reached in June between New Mexico and the U.S. government over the spill that polluted rivers in three western states. The spill released 3 million gallons (11 million liters) of wastewater from the inactive Gold King Mine in southwestern Colorado, sending a bright-yellow plume of arsenic, lead and other heavy metals south to New Mexico, through the Navajo Nation and into Utah through the San Juan and Animas rivers.

Your hormones help control different functions in your body and impact everything from your metabolism to how you feel. And if your hormones don't function the way they should, it can affect your health.

Hormone health is a big trend in wellness, according to theTikTok star Hannah Bronfman, who says you'll be hearing a lot more about it in the future. Specifically, she says, addressing endocrine disruptors is the "next big thing." Bronfman says that there are a lot of products about to hit the market that will be labeled "endocrine safe," meaning they're free of endocrine disruptors, which "can be found in just about all the products that we use," including food, toys and beauty products.

Bronfman is far from the first person to use the term "endocrine disruptors," and you've probably come across it at some point before. But you may not necessarily know what that means. So what are endocrine disruptors exactly, and how worried about them should you be? Here's the deal.
