At the University of Notre Dame, our LST is an “LSO Program” where every lab has 1-2 LSOs with specific responsibilities and a $500/lab/yr professional development budget. We’re lucky to have a Department that has a budget for this. Having the budget allows us to make sure LSOs attend regular meetings, and participate in scheduled safety walkthroughs (in addition to our EHS inspections).

Good morning,
Do your universities provide additional compensation to grad students/postdocs/technicians who are serving as the lab safety officer/designate/representative for their research group or is it just considered a group job similar to maintaining one of the lab's instruments?
Thanks.

Mark
